Family Health International in partnership with Madagascar's Ministry of Health and Family Planning (MOH/FP), designed a program to teach non-medically trained health agents in rural parts of the country to administer injectable contraceptives to women who want to use the method.

This program's success suggests that the community-based distributio...n of DMPA is an effective family planning solution not just for Razery but also for many remote communities in Madagascar. Indeed, it should be effective wherever the need for family planning services is great and women live far from health centers that offer modern contraceptive methods.

Injectable contraceptives — primarily in the form of depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) — have rapidly become the most popular modern contraceptive in sub-Saharan Africa. They are safe, effective, and convenient, and they can be used discreetly, without a partner's knowledge. For these reasons...

Family Health International and APHIA II project partners are improving services for people with HIV and their families.

As a result, such individuals and families have better access to health services, including HIV information, care and treatment (including antiretroviral treatment), and access to family planning services.

"Universal Access and Human Rights" is the theme for World AIDS Day this year. Respect for human rights has always been integral to Family Health International's work. It is not only the right thing to do, but it also helps us achieve better health outcomes.

Family Health International President of Research Ward Cates says family planning is essential to achieving all eight Millennium Development Goals. He called for strong policies that address unmet contraceptive need, promote consistent and correct contraceptive use, and make adherence to contraceptive technologies easier and more cost effective.

A...fter two full days sharing research, ideas and knowledge, the question today at the ICFP is how to put the knowledge to action. Ward Cates, of Family Health International, opened the final plenary by asking, “How do we do it?”

Family Health International agrees that more information is needed on emergency contraception in Kenya.

A study published in a recent edition of the East African Medical Journal found that just 15.8 percent of sexually active Kenyan university students said they used condoms every time they had sex, compared to 22.5 percent who reported never havi...ng used a condom. And according to the 2003 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey, nearly 20 percent of births in Kenya are unwanted and a further 25 percent happen at an unwanted time.

Family Health International and IntraHealth International have tested two job aids designed to help health care providers better serve women who return for reinjections of contraceptives.

Research that FHI conducted in South Africa, with support from the U.S. Agency for International Development, revealed that approximately half of injectable user...s were late for their reinjections, and a substantial portion of those who arrived within the approved grace period were denied a reinjection.

The easy-to-use job aids were modified for a global audience after being field-tested in Senegal.

Family Health International is partnering with the World Food Programme in Kenya to provide a care package that includes food support to people receiving antiretroviral therapy for HIV.
People living with HIV may also suffer from hunger and poverty.

Drugs alone are insufficient for this most vulnerable and food-insecure population, because HIV and ...malnutrition interact in complex ways and can exacerbate disease and nutritional problems.

Family Health International believes in a comprehensive approach to caring for people living with HIV, and nutrition is an integral component of care and treatment.

Good nutrition is critical for people living with HIV. Without it, HIV can gain the upper hand over the immune system, opportunistic infections proliferate, and antiretroviral drugs wi...ll be less easily absorbed and more difficult to tolerate.

Family Health International believes HIV/AIDS programs should include nutritional education, food-distribution campaigns, or training in food production, because nutritional health is a key ingredient for treatment success.

An FHI-managed program in Senegal has initiated a micro-garden project that is linked to HIV treatment sites. Patients are eq...uipped with seeds, tools, and hands-on training so they can cultivate their own micro-gardens. They learn strategies to grow fruits and vegetables using as little water as possible and relying on organic mixtures to repel pests and fungal growth.
