An on-line scammer got hold of a scanned copy of my driver's license and is now using my identity to scam other innocent people on Craigslist, specifically for apartments in NYC. I know for a fact that this criminal has opened up a G-Mail account in my name (odell.clara@gmail.com) and that is what he is using to do his... illegal dealings. (I know this because the last person who was scammed contacted me). Does anyone know anything about this, or been in this situation? Is there no way that Google can figure out who created an email account so this information can be given to the police? Remember: do not do ANY interactions on-line with someone who is calling themselves Clara Odell and who wants money through western union. Thanks, the REAL Clara OdellRead More

In a previous Security Levity post, I was asked a question that often comes up. A commenter wondered how is it that spammers can send spam from "my" email address? And is that something we should be worried about?

People have been hijacking or creating fake Facebook accounts and then asking for money, getting personal information, etc. from friends and family.

It's a very effective combination of technology and social engineering techniques. Great news that you discovered their plan and are taking them to task.

Judith K Moore Non IDT question. What is the best course of action when the credit bureaus take more than 45 days to update credit report?

The bureaus try to update information as quickly as possible - it's their business - but they can only report as quickly as information is given to them by regional data collectors and individual companies.

I would contact the creditor and confirm that the information is correct there. You can also ask them how they report their information to the bureaus.

On Oct 7th , 2009 I feel victim of a Wal-mart pre-paid visa scam. I purchased the card at the Wal-mart store. Immediately after purchase I opened the package that contained the card to activate it. Only at this point I am able to read of a list of charges not listed on the exterior package. Only $3 fee was not even c...lose to being truthful. Immediately I tried to get a refund store level and was told no. I called phone number on card and today still i have no refund and apparently no recourse. I can't even reach a company representative because the phone prompts will not allow it. I have really been scammed and I could use some help. Better business bureau contacted Green Dot Corp aka Wal-mart and they lied and said they had mailed me a check. Can your orgination protect me? Rhondahorn@aol.comRead More

I've read a bit about this card and it seems like there's a lot of confusion about the features and fees.
