In many cases out east the depatments are run like social groups with elections for officers each year. Many are srtictly volunteer, they recieve very small subsities for operations from cities, towns and townships. the balance of their budgets are raised on there own. There should be an investigation into the secratary and tresurer of this ... Read Moredepartment. The city has every right to what to know where the taxpayers money is. the bank has every right to want their collateral back! People thinking that dept should just be forgiven is part of the reason the banks are in trouble. It is no different than with your car or house, dont pay the note or lease on a $250K truck you better expect it to get repo'd.

It sounds like to me, the Monarch Chief don't care about the department. Here where I'm at in Wakulla County, Florida, we've had money woes but never serious like Monarch VFD. We have election of officers in 10 out of the 11 stations, however, our 11th station which is actually station 12 (inhoused with station 8) it's fire chief who is over the ... Read Morepaid firefighters at station 12 who is our county wide fire chief makes sure all the stations stay on top. Maybe, thier county (that Monarch is in) should hire a county wide fire chief monitor & control these situations like we do in my county. A situation like Monarch's doesn't just affect the Monarch area, which I'm sure it will affect the county as well. Maybe monarch and thier county should follow our example. Change the bylaws if they have too. It sucks when any budget strapped town, city or county have probems like these.

Happy Ending but sad too. Sad to think it took a tragedy like this to "set a precedent for defining a fire fighter" She was on scene doing her job no matter what the case!

ok to those that got hurt sorry for that. but keep in mind how are u suppose to help somebody when u get hurt. thats the first thing they teach u in any public service job: take ur time and relax. if u get hurt it takes 2 men to help. since it was to men that got hurt that now takes 4 extra men 6 men altogether. yes adrenaline is going but common sense also has to be there

One thing as an engineer - We learn the water moves so you cannot drive a fire truck like a "normal truck" the weight of the water can force your truck around a corner faster and harder than "normal" a good operator knows to pay attention to this... SAFETY 1st.. We can't help anyone else if we have to help ourselves...

Neil are you telling me a big city chief will never assume command of a incident? Take a look at who is assuming IC of any major incident working under single verses unified command. Also, hospital / airline CEO's will never be assuming command in an operating rooms or planes. Big difference.
