“The Houston service is a great addition for travellers from Edmonton and across northern Alberta,” says Reg Milley, EIA President and CEO. “Business travellers from northern Alberta’s energy sector now enjoy the quickest possible route to Houston, America’s oil capital. Houston also offers easy connections across the US, Central and South America. Now it’s up to Edmontonians to ensure the success of the new route. When people are making travel plans, it’s important to choose services like the new Continental flight or one of our other US and international non-stops to ensure these routes continue to be profitable and maintained in our community.”

From Houston, Continental serves more than 160 destinations with over 600 daily departures. Flights to and from Edmonton are timed to offer easy connections throughout the rest of the airline’s extensive global network. In addition to great flight options for business travellers, this Houston flight also offers connections to popular leisure destinations like Florida and the Caribbean. Continental is the newest member of the Star Alliance, meaning Aeroplan frequent flyers can earn valuable points when using the new Edmonton-Houston service.

Chihuahua mix abandoned in dumpster part of life-saving EHS initiative

Danny and more than 80 other small-breed dogs being flown to Edmonton as part of Operation California Canine Cuties Phase 3

Edmonton, October 8, 2009 – The Edmonton Humane Society is launching the third phase of a successful and very popular initiativ...e to save dogs’ lives and to put a dent in the puppy mill and puppy broker industry. “Operation California Canine Cuties – Phase 3” kicks off on Thursday, October 8, 2009 with the transfer of more than 80 adorable small-breed dogs from the Central California SPCA to Edmonton.

As with the second phase “Freedom Flight”, generous EHS donor, Jan Folk of “The Orange Dog” is once again arranging for a jet to fly the dogs to Edmonton on October 8. These dogs have recently been living in foster care in Fresno because there is no space for them in the local animal shelter. Staff at the Central California SPCA continuously deal with large volumes of admitted and stray animals each day and feel that they would have no other choice but to eventually euthanize the dogs if they were not transferred.

Some of the dogs coming to Edmonton have terribly sad starts to their lives, like Danny, the Chihuahua mix. The 7 month old was found starving in a dumpster, shaking and terrified. He was dumped there, unwanted and left to die. He was brought to the CCSPCA, treated for Parvo and survived the deadly disease, but unfortunately his time was up after being overlooked on the adoption floor. Thanks to this initiative, he has another chance at life, here in Alberta.

The EHS first launched the initiative a year ago in order to have a constant supply of the extremely popular small-breed dogs to encourage people to turn to the Society first when looking to bring one into their family. The Society finds that more people are willing to wait for the California dogs because they know that many of those sold in newspaper or on-line ads, or in pet stores may come from puppy mills or brokers where they often live in horrible conditions; and are often bred without considering the dogs’ welfare.

So far during the first two phases of the transfer program more than 80 dogs have been brought to Edmonton from California and placed in loving Alberta “forever homes.” With this next phase, the EHS will have helped a total of about 160. “It’s a large number, but doesn’t pale in comparison to the thousands of animals facing euthanasia in central California animal shelters,” says EHS Spokesperson Shawna Randolph. “Especially during this season of thanks, we are so appreciative of the hundreds of hours that volunteers down in California have spent gathering up the dogs, having them vaccinated and spayed or neutered, and then driving the dogs 8 hours from Fresno to Los Angeles for the flight. It’s an amazing operation to get the dogs to us!”

The first two phases have also helped many “Alberta native” animals find homes. Many people have visited the EHS shelter interested in a California dog, but instead went home with another dog, or a cat. The Society predicts the same will happen when the California dogs go up for adoption once again this time.

This latest group will be available much earlier than during the first two phases because they are already spayed or neutered. The EHS will make them available in groups of 15 or so a day over the next week, starting during the Thanksgiving long weekend on Saturday, October 10. This is to ensure that people have ample opportunity to adopt one. The public is advised to keep checking the EHS website for updates at www.edmontonhumanesociety.com. The adoption fee for each of these dogs will be $50 more than others to cover the cost of the vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, and caring for the dogs before going up for adoption.

EIA’s full-scale emergency exercise a safety-related success

New passenger tracking system and Mobile Aircraft Fire Trainer employed

(September 22, 2009) Edmonton, Alta.—Twenty plus ambulances, 20 firefighting apparatuses, 140 volunteers, STARs, emergency response services personnel, police, government agencies, commun...ity supports and Canada’s first Mobile Aircraft Fire Trainer all added up to the completion of a successful emergency training exercise at Edmonton International Airport (EIA). The exercise was conducted today.

“This was the largest emergency response training exercise we’ve ever done at Edmonton International Airport,” says Burl Hamm, EIA’s manager of emergency response services and emergency planning. “After we review the exercise, we’ll use the results to enhance our integrated regional emergency and hospital services. Our ongoing training will make a difference in someone’s life if a real emergency situation occurs.”

Simulating an airliner crash, the exercise was part of Edmonton Airports’ regulatory requirements with Transport Canada to maintain an effective emergency response plan for the airport, airlines and regional response agencies.

"This was the first large-scale simulation exercise we have encountered since the transition of ambulance provision to Alberta Health Services on April 1, 2009," says Shane Inkster, emergency medical services manager with Alberta Health Services, North/Central zone. “Based on its complexity, magnitude and dynamics, this scenario provided us with a venue to adequately test EMS system plans and procedures.”

EIA’s emergency response services team also had an opportunity to put its Mobile Aircraft Fire Trainer (MAFT) through the paces during an official exercise. The fully self-contained system provides training in the control and extinguishment of aviation fuel spill fires and aircraft incident fire emergencies in and around an aircraft. Going forward, EIA’s emergency response services team will use its expertise with the unit to provide emergency response training at other airports.

“The MAFT unit is an invaluable resource for local airport training,” says Hamm. “By burning propane it is also a more environmentally friendly training tool.”

Edmonton Airports will be providing an up-close-and-personal showcase of the high-tech MAFT unit for the media on October 6 as part of Fire Prevention Week, which runs from October 4-10.

Molson Pub cracks a cold one at EIA
Full-service bar & restaurant now open in US Passenger Lounge

(October 6, 2009) Edmonton, Alta.—Edmonton International Airport (EIA) is pleased to welcome another full-service bar and restaurant to the growing array of food and beverage options available to airport customers. EIA pas...sengers can now enjoy the atmosphere and menu of Molson Pub, opening today in the US Passenger Lounge.

“Molson Pub is a great addition to the changing face of the US Passenger Lounge,” says Reg Milley, EIA President and CEO. “With the recent opening of the temporary Terminal Express, which helps pave the way towards Expansion 2012, maintaining our customer service standards is very important. Molson Pub’s outstanding food and beverage offerings are part of our overall plan to improve the passenger experience at EIA.”

In addition to pub-style food, Molson Pub serves breakfast, salads and entrees along with a “grab and go” offering. Opening daily at 5 a.m. and closing after the last flight of the day, the pub seats 51 and is managed by HMS Host. For more information, visit www.flyeia.com/molsonpub.

The next phase of EIA’s concessions program in the US Passenger Lounge will be the removal of the Toast outlet, which begins today. The space will be renovated and returned for additional departure lounge seating. This process will be fast tracked to ensure the disruption to passengers is limited.

EIA now has scheduled service to 11 US non-stop destinations: Chicago, Denver, Houston (starting Nov. 1), Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Palm Springs, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Seattle and WestJet just announced seasonal service to Maui for spring 2010. From 2002 to 2008, EIA’s US passenger traffic has grown by 140 per cent making it one of the airport’s fastest-growing market segments. For more information, visit www.flyeia.com/USA.
