July 4th only comes once a year, but every day can be Food Independence Day if you grow some of your own food and support local food producers and growers in your area.

The video tells the story of the "America's Garden" from 1800 when President John Adams planted the first "first vegetables" to feed ...his own family to the present ...

Food Independence Day It might seem unlikely that a Communist country could have anything to teach the US about food independence, but, as this short video shows, Cuba is not just any communist country. Its unique history and geography make it an example worth studying.

Cuba is not only an island nation in terms of its geography, but also its economy and politics as a result of the US embargo and the fall of the Soviet Union, Cuba's largest source of trade and aid until the Berlin Wall fell in 1991. Cut off from the world's pipeline of food, oil, chemical pesticid...

Food Independence Day Today's Food Independence Day shout-out goes to our Kitchen Gardener-in-Chief, First Lady Michelle Obama, for planting the seeds of a healthier and more self-reliant country in America's highest-profile backyard. Did you know that the White House garden grew over 1000 pounds of food last year, part of it donated to a ...local soup kitchen? We call that leading and eating by example.

Back in the day when I was a kid we did not have fast food places, I was a teenager before I saw my first McDonalds but my family never ate there. Anyway I've never eaten at a McDonalds, Sonic, Taco Bell, Olive Garden, what's another one?...?? Burger King. I've never been through a drive-through, but I've eaten a lot of rice, beans, greens, and other cheap food...you do have to cook it yourself. Don't know about other states but in Arkansas being fat is a life-style choice, plus men like fat women, go to the mall and 9 out of 10 men will be with a fat women...my friend pointed that out one day when we were shopping and she likes being fat and her ex-husband always supported her and her weight.See More

    • Nika B Joy - thank you for sharing your story - VERY important. I lived in those conditions after grad school in Boston (by choice, not as a kid like you) and I totally know what you are talking about. It sounds like your mom and dad worked really hard to bring some green into your diets! I can only imagine that near-by community gardens would have been a HUGE boon to your diet, HUGE.
