About A Fraction of the Whole by Steve Toltz

'The fact is, the whole of Australia despises my father more than any other man, just as they adore my uncle more than any other man. I might as well set the story straight about both of them.'

Heroes or criminals?
Crackpots of visionaries?
Relatives or enemies?

It's a simple family story...

From the New South Wales bush to bohemian Paris, from sports fields to strip clubs, from the jungles of Thailand to a leaky boat in the Pacific, A Fraction of the Whole follows the Deans on their freewheeling, scathingly funny and finally deepy moving quest to leave their mark on the world.

Just finished the book tonight and I enjoyed the hell out of it. Far and away the most enjoyable read I've had in the last few years. I read it during my lunch breaks for the last month or so and it lived mostly on the passenger seat of my car. There were more than a few angry motorists in Ann Arbor honking at me becau...se I couldn't help but pick it up to read just a few paragraphs and proceeded to get distracted.Read More

Holly

Holly This book is awesome, I'm about 3 quarters through and have loved every bit! Wish I didnt have to keep putting it down!

Nathaniel

Nathaniel This novel is one of my favorites of all time. I loved it from start to finish. It's a mixture of the zany intellectual play of Tom Robbins, the characters that start to feel like old friends that John Irving writes, the propulsive insanity of Hunter Thompson, and the epic storyline reminiscent of Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. I absolutely could not put it down and will visit it again and again.

Paul Sellers

Paul Sellers is 260 pages in n chuffed there is 450ish to go - brilliant

Cathrine Lødøen

Cathrine Lødøen I go for *The Whole of the whole* - I LOVE this book. 5 stars. Thank you for a great read :-) ! Should have won the Booker ;-) !

Alok Pisharody

Alok Pisharody lame idea: the blurb of the book should be called "a fraction of the fraction of the whole."

Bidushi Tumrok Limbu

Bidushi Tumrok Limbu i love its story....which is based in reality ...i am really inspired by young writer ....

Gamze Abramov

Gamze Abramov Since I read it in 1993, my favorite book has been Midnight's Children. Salman, while you will always hold a very special place on my bookshelf (16 year is a LONG time), I've been swept off my feet by spunky Steve. From the moment we met it was one long marathon session (like our first time Salman). And now I can't stop telling everyone...

Sasha Adetunji

Sasha Adetunji i've read lots of books in my life. this one's best so far. I feel great satisfaction of reading it, try to read less to save it for the future if you know what i mean. Looking forward to read other Toltz's books

I nearly died while reading this book! True story; had set up a hammock near a creek bed and was happily getting lost in the story when the rope on the hammock snapped. I fell onto a large, sharp broken tree trunk which just missed my chest. Still have scars on the inside of my arm!
Loved the book though!

I agree! I've never read anything like it! I'm also asking 'when's the next book?' I know what you mean by kid-free time!
