Great column! I have never been one to buy much when I travel, but invariably I return home with original postcards, bookmarks and business cards. One of my favorite souveniers is a small plastic Thorny Devil purchased from the gift shop at Uluru in Oz. The little guy sums up mu Outback adventure perfectly!

One thing to remember is that the locals do not need you to come and just observe - help their economy, try to buy things that they make, eat in their restos, etc. but do spend money and help the economy of the places you visit.
