Tina Gainer Barton

Tina Gainer Barton Hello! I am going to visit my Dad in a specialty hospital in Latrobe PA and was wondering if I can get access to this trail anywhere near Latrobe. It's supposed to be nice weather Monday and I will want to get some exercise before visiting hours start at noon. Any advice?

This will bring peace of mind to many trail users and cell service (where none existed previously) to several communities in the area. Now: when you're on the trail, don't yak on your phone. Don't text either. Respect the dignity of the trail by finding a discreet spot to use the little device!

Well, I get it, I understand it, but on of the things we enjoyed on our very slow trip from Connellsville to Cumberland earlier this fall, was being 'out of touch' for a few days. Liked it a lot.
But I know its a good idea anyway.

From another Ohio guy....I've made 2 solo trips over the year, DC to Boston and Boston to DC. Many factors play into the decision to go solo or with a tour. For both rides I stayed in hotels and hostiles. I also used AMTRACK. Duration of each trip was 4 days.

Also from Ohio...Four of us rode the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal Trail (Pittsburgh-D.C.). We took an SUV and at any given time, three people cycled and one leapfrogged ahead with the SUV then backtracked by bike to meet up with the others. (We changed drivers mid-day, so each of us had car duty for 1/2 day on every second day.) We ... We enjoyed both the companionship of others on the journey and the flexibility of going at our own pace. However you do it, you'll have a GREAT time! Will send our itinerary if anyone is interested.

The public meeting isn't to discuss, it's to decide. A location for the tower has been chosen in Henry Clay Twp., Fayette, Co. The tower meets all the regulations of the township. However, there is a neighbor who opposes the tower. From what I understand, this is a hearing of the pros and cons. We need lots and lot...s and lots of people in support. The service will cover the south end of the Passage section between Ohiopyle & Confluence, all of Confluence, Ursina, Draketown, and Harnedsville and south to around Mile 59. It's late for letters, but a call to the Twp office, check the web, would help.Read More

Cell phones have become a modern convenience that most people expect to be available. However if you live in southern Somerset County, cell phone service is rarely available.

The trail is open year-round except for the Big Savage Tunnel, which is closed for the winter around Dec. 1 to early April. You will still be able to ride through November unless heavy rains or snow make the trails muddy. Lower elevations might still have some fall foliage as well.

Most of November is a good time unless a storm is approaching. The Big Savage Tunnel is scheduled to close the first weekend in December. Remember the weather in West Newton, Connellsville, Ohiopyle and Confluence is generally MUCH milder and out of the wind as that south of Meyersdale between there and the Big Savage Tunnel. Also, many of the businesses are close at the end of October. This is the last weekend for Lucky Dog, and Riversedge in Confluence.
