The Senate blocked action on a bill to increase Medicare payments to doctors, legislation that had become a proxy for the larger partisan fight over health care policy.

From the NYT: Under current law, doctors face a 21.5 percent cut in Medicare fees in 2010 and then annual 5 percent cuts for several years. Since 2003, Congress has stepped in to postpone such cuts, but it has usually found ways to offset the cost to the government.

The bill this year, by Senator Debbie Stabenow, Democrat of Michigan, had no offset and would have repealed the current cost-cutting formula, known as the sustainable growth rate.

Congress has thought that restoring the cuts every year was necessary to keep competent doctors in the Medicare program. I think they were and _are_still_ right.... Read More

But until the government can fix the existing Medicare and Medicaid programs, I think they have no business trying any more 'reforms'.
