Get-it-done Guy Today's podcast came from a listener question about how to stay committed to a weight loss program. Weight loss is tricky, since my understanding is that it often involves lots of other issues. I brought in several general commitment principles, and hope that they can be applied to weight loss in this case.

I appreciate your awareness that losing weight is complicated. Have you ever read Rethinking Thin by Gina Kolata? It gave me a lot to think about, and helped confirm what I've been suspecting for a while, that the whole calorie system is either broken or misconceived.

And a comment on your asking roomies not to buy fattening things? Really ... See Moredifficult. I've found a compromise that mostly works in my house though -- I've asked my partner to PLEASE only buy cookies/ice cream flavors that I don't like. And then to hide them from me. :) Which works until every so often he gets a flavor that I love without realizing its a favorite. Sigh.

Get-it-done Guy A listener wrote in asking for help managing inventories of stuff (e.g. books, CDs, etc.) I don't think they were referring to inventories in the business sense, but rather to keeping track of their own collections. I have some ideas, from my own past, but am looking for other ideas...?

Also: how many pieces can I easily manage? How can I trim the collection to that many items? Is there any reason why my collection absolutely must have more than that many pieces? If so, can I divide it into separate collections? (book collection----> cookbook collection, home repair book collection, and zombie world domination resource book collection)

Stever, have you looked into iTrackMine? They have a page on FB (facebook.com/pages/iTrackmine/142437703192?ref=mf) but I have not spent a lot of time looking into how they do what they do. But it's all about keeping track.

Get-it-done Guy This week's episode is on organizing the various stuff that comes from projects, hobbies, and classwork. The episode answers listener Alex's question. The answer was inspired by my office, which works best when everything has a neat, well-defined place, identified clearly with a little sticky label. http://getitdone.qu...ickanddirtytips.com/how-to-organize-stuff.aspx

Get-it-done Guy Am just realizing the power of TiVO/DVR (yes, I'm a slow learner). Let's me fit entertainment into my schedule instead of forcing me to meet their schedule. End result? I watch more than I would otherwise. Everyone wins.

I can't remember the last time I was at the mercy of the networks' schedules. I used to timeshift with a VCR and was an early adopter of the TIVO. TIVO just made shifting so much easier.

Tivo is a major lifestyle enhancer! Couple that with a DVD recorder and you have complete control and can share your faves with friends.

Get-it-done Guy While writing my book, each chapter was plagued by the very thing it addressed. I procrastinated the chapter on procrastination. The chapter on getting organized started with the most disorganized outline. "Leverage" is the only chapter that didn't reuse material from the previous draft. I'd love to think it was the un...iverse giving me a chance to test the material. Maybe I was just being flaky.

You were being flaky.

At least you were aware of it, and what to do about it. You should write a book!

Get-it-done Guy Tempting to interview successful ppl to find the qualities of their success. Be careful, tho. Asking for success stories instead of specific tactics risks the Halo Effect. Richard St. John's TED Talk succumbs to the Halo Effect: http://su.pr/2rP785 . If you DO ask about tactics, finding causality requires you make sure... people who used those tactics succeeded, and people who didn't use those tactics didn't succeed.

Get-it-done Guy I started celebrating the Friday before last, because I thought manuscript done meant work was done. Nope. We had a full round of edits to go. Just finished up all the edits and the book's off to the copy-editor's desk. My part--the hard writing part, at least--is over! Yippee! That light at the end of the tunnel is ev...en closer, now. It's pretty. It could be light filtering through a glass of Dom Perignon.

I did participate today. Not at the level I would have wanted to... I just wish I could coordinate other work responsibilities. I would like to try something similar outside of a normal workday. Saturday actionday or similar?

I've started doing action days for myself whenever I have a whole day to myself and an inexhaustible urge to lie around and watch NCIS reruns. My friends are impressed, even though no one wants to join me yet.

Get-it-done Guy Six weeks of book mono-tasking-focus & flow was WONDERFUL. Multi-tasking today felt draining/scattered. FOCUS RULES! (as my book will discuss). The manuscript is done and we're in the 2nd-to-last editing pass. The book goes to copy-editing next week, so the end of my intense writing involvement is very much in sight. T...he light at the end of the tunnel is hopefully the light on the set of Oprah.

Get-it-done Guy I've breathed a huge sigh of relief. My manuscript went off to the editor Friday. Today I'm supposedly resting and relaxing. Looking around, the office is a disaster area. Two more action days this coming week to start bringing my life back into a semblance of normalcy after 18 months of writing. Join me Thursday 11/5 ...or Friday 11/6: http://actionday1105.eventbrite.com or http://actionday1106.eventbrite.com
