The Global Fund for Women Subula: Arab Feminists for Change & the Global Fund for Women present a staged reading of “Bareed Mista3jil, True Stories” – published by Meem, a community of LBTQ women in Lebanon.

"Bareed Mista3jil" is a brave new book published by Meem in Beirut, Lebanon. The book, available in both English and Arabic versions, is a ...collection of 41 true (and personal) stories from lesbians, bisexuals, queer and questioning women, and transgender persons from all over Lebanon. The introduction to the book is a 30-page analysis of the general themes presented in the stories.

This long-awaited publication comes to dispel the myths surrounding these questions and to reveal a glimpse of the lives existing invisibly and silently in different Lebanese communities. The event will include a presentation by Meem, and books will be available for sale. Suggested donation of $10 - $25.

The Global Fund for Women Dr. Wanjiru Kamau-Rutenberg’s presentation will address the new energy about "doing good in Africa," specifically the hype surrounding micro-finance, philanthro-capitalism, and the Oprah Girls’ Academy. She will explore the cracks that are beginning to emerge in these initiatives—allegations that micro-finance is the n...ew face of loan sharking among poor communities and reports of sexual abuse at Oprah’s leadership academy.

As both a Professor of Politics and a Kenyan working on a philanthropic project serving Kenyan girls, Dr. Kamau-Rutenberg will offer a unique perspective to the question: How can we understand both the challenges and the potential successes of new approaches to philanthropic engagement in Africa?

Dr. Wanjiru Kamau-Rutenberg is an assistant professor in the Politics Department at the University of San Francisco and founder and executive director of Akili Dada. Dr. Kamau-Rutenberg volunteered with the Sub Saharan Africa team at GFW in 2007.

The event will be had at the Global Fund for Women, 222 Sutter St. Suite 500, San Francisco from 12:00pm - 1:30pm.

Cost is free; you are welcome to bring your lunch. RSVP for all events to Diane Patterson at dpatterson@globalfundforwomen.org

The Global Fund for Women Global Fund grantee partner Amior Zhao, of the Chinese Lala Alliance, speaks on its history, challenges and successes of building and sustaining a coalition of 17 lala organizations. Lala is the term used to describe the lesbian, bi- and trans communities in China.

The Chinese Lala Alliance is an extraordinary organis...ation, working in a complex context. As our sister organisation, Astrea, puts it: "In a country where formal organizations are a relatively new idea and public demonstrations are illegal, the Chinese lala leadership trainings—the Lala Camps—are setting off a seismic shift. In 2007, the first Lala Camp moved lalas from isolation to connection. Then in October 2008 a series of five regional Lala Camps empowered 1,000 lalas from 35 cities with support, strategies, and vision. From Anshan, a rural area where organizers sell blood sausage to raise money for their activities, to metropolitan Beijing, home of the country’s only lesbian print magazine and largest lala group, the landscape of lala activism in China was fundamentally changed."

Event will be held at the Global Fund for Women, 222 Sutter St. Suite 500, San Francisco, CA from 12:30pm - 2:00pm,

Cost is free; you are welcome to bring your lunch.
