Deval Patrick In August, the Governor demanded a frank review of the condition of the MBTA - an issue that previous administrations have been content to leave uncovered - and demanded transparency and accountability for the people who rely on the T to get to work and school and home again. That report was announced today and you can find a copy of it at the link below.

Deval Patrick Governor Patrick announced a series of budget cuts yesterday designed to close a $600 million budget shortfall. He recorded a video message about how the cuts maintain our commitment to our students, our communities, and
important safety net programs for our most vulnerable citizens, and
strengthens the foundation upon which Massachusetts will build a
prosperous post-recovery economy. Check it out.

John, if you're taking pix of your dog or your kids that will restrike the pose, that's great. LOL Otherwise, at these events, a Governor or President isn't going to rewalk their steps after shaking hands with others. You just keep snapping. I've got pix of the Governor with my son, but, they aren't ALL flattering!!

Excellent initiative however sounding like the broken record the 28000 residents still stuck with UNITIL and paying the 2nd highest rates in the ctry.as well as having regular outages on blue sky days, are hopeful that someday we won't be forced to deal with UNITIL as our utility provider. In the meantime please let the DPU we are now into "late" Fall:) winter comes soon.....

Young people are central to the economic and civic growth of the Commonwealth. This initiative is aimed at making sure young people are attracted to Massachusetts; see this as a place to start companies, launch a career and build a home and family.

This applies equally to people who are from Massachusetts- making sure t...hey can make their dreams happen here; and to retaining young people who come here for education or work.
This listening tour is an opportunity for the Administration to ask young people to stay and ask for their input on the state’s issues, as well as give them a chance to network with each other and discuss a common vision.

Over a hundred young people have already joined the conversation in Springfield and Dartmouth during September meetings with Secretaries Greg Bialecki and Suzanne Bump of the Executive Offices of Housing and Economic Development and Labor and Workforce Development. Visit our Engage!Blog to hear what they had to say! http://engage.blog.state.ma.us/blog/young-adults/

Please join Governor Deval Patrick and a panel of local young adults to continue this important conversation.

All are welcome - Please RSVP at grassroots.governance@state.ma.us

I am Anthonia, and we met at UMass Amherst Integrated Science building.
Its nice that we got a tuition rebate this semester, but I suggest that tuition should continue to be waived for college students as that would entice and retain students to complete their college education.

Thanks For coming to our school to speak to young people like myself. And I hope that things will be made less difficult for every student.

I work for an agency that provides support to people with disabilities and I protest further budget cuts to people with disabilities. Too often, the state has cut services to the most vulnerable individuals among us. The Commonwealth’s obligation is to protect this population, not cut services to them. People First!

Governor Patrick I am very dissappointed in the Administrations over sight on the spending of affordable housing funds. Especially from the Stimulus package. Most of the Housing in Western Mass and other areas of the state DO NOT have enough accessible housing for wheel chair access for those of us in wheel chairs. Several developments use lip ... Read Moreservice about Accessible ready yet don't even met half of the standard requirements for new construction. I am also disappointed in the adminstration NOT requiring all remodels be fully handicapped accessible. Some housing developments have made a mockery out of the accessibility requirements like HAP INC in Springfield & their Maintenance Management Team in Chicopee. HAP INC has another Proposal in Amherst called Butternut Farm that has been advertised yet there is no mention of accessibility anywhere's in there advertisements. The property is also another wet lands property with no proper drainage plan like some of their other existing properties. How much money will you let them waste??? Will you let them get away with this again? We all need to know whether you will stand up to these providers so that we can determine if we will support you again for this up coming election in 2010. Accessibility is a Civil Right!! NOT A PRIVILEDGE.

All:
The below email was forwarded to my attention by a supporter. What about the other side of the discussion? What about funding, specifically chapter 70, a program deemed "broken" by the Governor? Small communities like mine, Swampscott, are managing to get thru 2010, given stimulus funding, but what about 2011 and 2012? What about all the teachers that are gone and what about the programs that are cut? The Governor on at least 5 separate occasions has called the chapter 70 program "broken." So what then is the responsible thing to do? Apparently nothing. Those town hall meetings in which the Governor spoke of the chapter 70 program as "broken" include Salem (2008 document attached), Pembroke (2009, YouTube video below), Hyannis (2008, YouTube video below), Lynn (2009), and Gloucester (2007). After you are finished patting yourselves on the back you may want to attempt to start the discussion on how we fix a broken program. You can't fix it if you don't discuss it. Oh and then there is the chapter 70 section 4 study that has not been done in 8 years even though it is a requirement that it get done every 2 years.

Friends:
Today, Massachusetts schools received some excellent news: our 4th and 8th grade students ranked first in the nation in math for the third time in a row. This is an impressive day for our educators and our students. The rankings coming from the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Math exam. African-American 8th graders made the most significant gains, with the percent of students scoring Proficient or higher spiking from 13 to 23 percent.
But as strong as our schools rank nationally, we must not stop working to improve them. We still have some schools that chronically under-perform, and we must also push forward to ensure our strongest schools continue to lead the way and prepare our students for the new economies of the 21st century.
Currently, essential reforms proposed by the Governor and his Administration aimed at closing the achievement gap are being discussed in the legislature and within the Joint Committee on Education. These reforms represent a turning point in the history of education in Massachusetts and are an opportunity to launch the next era of excellence for Massachusetts schools. This legislation will transform under-performing schools and create new opportunities for educators and partners to develop innovative schools of excellence. I encourage you to find out more about this legislation here.
The Governor has a deep understanding of the importance education plays in transforming lives because it is what transformed his own. That is why he will continue in Massachusetts' proud tradition of investing in our students and teachers. This type of investment is also why early indicators show our Commonwealth is poised to emerge from this economic crisis sooner and stronger than the rest of the US.
Sincerely,
Charlotte Golar Richie
Executive Director
Deval Patrick Committee
