Jenny

Jenny I've never heard this "on foot" or "by foot" that people have started using. When did it start and by whom is this normally spoken? BTW, I'm from the states, born and raised in Missouri. We always used the verb "walked."

Hi Grammar Girl - have been following your podcast now for a couple of months - it's great! I write summaries and analyses in my business and find your tips and explanations so helpful! I have a question for you - I'm starting to hear more people using the term "funnily" in their speech lately, as in "funnily enough......." what's with this? Shouldn't it be "funny enough.."? Have you noticed this too?Read More

I don't think it's a word I would ever use--it sounds awkward--but the three dictionaries I checked all included "funnily."

I do. I hear there's a big push to start teaching grammar again in Australia, and I believe the SAT recently added a grammar section.

Angie Thweatt Lay Good morning Grammar Girl. I'm a new fan, thanks to a coworker who recommended your site. I need an opinion. Does it irritate you as much as it does me when the media uses the word "bucks" in place of "dollars"? I cringe everytime I hear that word.

It's very informal, but I've heard much worse from the media.

Jennifer

Jennifer Hi Grammar Girl - There is a disagreement in my department about one vs. two spaces after a sentence. Despite a formidable amount of evidence that the standard is firmly set at one space, there is a holdout in favor of the typewriter-inspired two space rule. Any suggestions for getting this person to give up the attachment to two spaces?

I covered it recently in my podcast, but I too have found that some people refuse to change despite logic and most style guides pointing to a one-space style: http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/spaces-period-end-of-sentence.aspx

Thank you for the clarification. I've been a two space person up until now.

Debbie Allen

Debbie Allen Good Morning GG-I am a new fan with a question-I hear the phrase "went missing" all the time now and it just does not sound correct. Is this correct?

It is perfectly correct. Why do you think otherwise, by the way?

I did a podcast about "went missing" almost two years ago: http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/went-missing.aspx

it may be technically correct but "has/have/had been missing, or "was missing" sounds better I think

Marilyn Nicholson

Marilyn Nicholson I can NOT find concrete backup as to the rules for including a comma in the name of a business--for example: "Doughnut Holding, LLC"--is a comma required before "LLC," and "Inc."? Can someone please direct me??? Thanks!

Well, the use of comma in this stead is to mark the end of a complete word and a contraction. You wont use a comma if there was no contraction. For instance: Doughnut Holding Corporation.

The "AP Stylebook" and the "Chicago Manual of Style" recommend against using commas before "Inc."

Jon Shelley Perry What is your opinion on using "goes" in place of "says?" I cringe each time I hear it, but I am guilty of using it in rapid speech as well.
Thanks,
Shelley

I cringe too, but I also occasionally find myself doing it (or something like it). Speech is a more informal situation than writing, and we usually can't go back and edit what came out of our mouths.

Shankar Parasaram

Shankar Parasaram Hi GG, Your's is an awesome podcast and I am learning a lot from them. I have a question, is it correct to say 'I am meeting with somebody'? (I am confused with the use of the word With in this sentence, I think it should just be 'I am meeting somebody'). Thanks,
Shankar

I'm terribly sorry for daring to comment here but I believe I do have something worthy of mention to say. The use of with is optional when it is followed by the noun. For example: I had a meeting with my mentor. In verb form, however, with is often (not always) redundant; therefore, it is better to leave it out.

Baby I can hardly wait;
I'm gonna meet you at the gate.

I would take a different meaning from "I am meeting with Shankar" and "I am meeting Shankar."

The first (meeting with) suggests to me that the writer is having a discussion with Shankar. The second (meeting) suggests to me that the writer is being introduced to Shankar or joining Shankar at a specific location.
