Founded by Scott Walker in Port Townsend, Washington, Graywolf Press has evolved from a letterpress housed in an outbuilding in Scott’s backyard, to one of the country’s leading non profit literary publishers.
Now based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and directed by publisher Fiona McCrae, Graywolf publishes about thirty books a year and works with Farrar, Straus & Giroux to distribute those titles to bookstores and media outlets across the country. Our commitment to poetry is as strong as ever, but poetry is no longer our sole focus. Throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s the Graywolf list expanded to include beautiful literary novels and short story collections, unique memoirs, thought provoking essays, and landmark books on writing and craft.
Over the past thirty-five years we’ve carved out a distinctive backlist and had the honor to discover and/or publish such singular writers as Elizabeth Alexander, Mary Jo Bang, Charles Baxter, Sven Birkerts, Tess Gallagher, Linda Gregg, Eamon Grennan, Tony Hoagland, Jane Kenyon, William Kittredge, Per Petterson, Carl Phillips, William Stafford, Natasha Trethewey, and Brenda Ueland.
