Commission to Host Community Meeting in Dorchester
Boston – The Boston Public Health Commission, in partnership with the Alliance for Community Health, is holding a Dorchester community dialogue on the health status of residents. The meeting will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, December 2 at the Grea...t Hall, 6 Norfolk Street (corner of Washington Street and Norfolk/ Talbot Avenues) in Codman Square.
Participants will learn about the findings of the latest Health of Boston report and what key concerns are affecting their neighborhood. They will also have the opportunity to discuss the impact of race, gender, ethnicity, income, education, and the environment on health.
“This dialogue will be a platform to share ideas about how communities can work together to prevent disease and build healthy neighborhoods,” said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, executive director of the Boston Public Health Commission. “Everyone has a role to play in making our communities healthy.”
The Dorchester meeting is co-sponsored by the Codman Square Health Council and the Codman Square Neighborhood Council. The organizations hope the meeting will be a catalyst for residents to make positive change in their neighborhood.
“We must be proactive about the health of our community,” said Maya Copeland, of the Codman Square Health Council. “Youth, adults, we all must take part in developing solutions to the health issues we face.”
One of the most active youth-led organizations in Dorchester – BOLD Teens – will join the Commission at the meeting. “Breath of Life Dorchester” is focused on environmental and social justice by addressing the health and safety concerns of the Boston community.
“It is unacceptable that we experience some of the worst health outcomes in Boston,” said Shaquille Jones, of the BOLD Teens. “We must use these community meetings to gather data and meet others ready to make change.”
The meeting is free and open to the public. Light dinner and childcare will be provided at no additional charge. For more information, please contact Pam Jones at 617-534-7195 or pjones@bphc.org.
