This is extremely frustrating to me. A friend of mine posted this to my page.

Four years ago my family was repeatedly poisoned by our neighbors use of an OrganoPhosphate pesticide. I had written hundreds of letters to Government officials and didn't understand why few answered. Until now! Big Ag/Big Chem are so intertwined with our Government officials and Agencies its hard to see where one stops and the other begins.... Read More

I have taken a new approach to raising awareness and working for changes in use and labeling. I am looking into individual politicians, Corporations and Government Agencies.

Tom Vilsack the Secretary of the USDA, The possible Chief Ag Negotiator Mr. 'Syngenta' Siddiqui, DeLauro, Baucus, McCain, Chambliss Obama and lists go on and on.

FDA, EPA, USDA, DOJ, Department of Health... We can do it but until the greasing of the palms STOPS it won't. Our Government needs to know we are 'on to them'. This is about OUR childrens health.

The American Farm Bureau Federation was 'awarded' a 1.5 million dollar 'grant' from the USDA this week. <They are big supporters of Vilsack> The American Farm Bureau Federation, CropLife<Siddiqui> and so many others are tightly woven into our legislation processes. The corruption, self interest and disregard within our Government is mind blowing!!

I did a little research into IRM=GMO and the ABSTC. I am not done yet but thought some of your readers may find it interesting.

http://www.monsanto.com/pdf/responsibility/youth/L2B_Plan.pdf

...Agricultural Biotechnology Stewardship Technical Committee includes Bt corn registrants Dow AgroSciences; Monsanto; Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., a subsidiary of DuPont; and Syngenta Seeds, Inc. ... Read More

The committee is working with the EPA to enforce IRM compliance. The NCGA and the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), along with various seed companies and universities, all support the committee's IRM compliance efforts. For additional information on biotechnology, visit www.ncga.com

Nick Storer, Global Science Policy Leader for Biotechnology for Dow AgroSciences, is chair of the Agriculture Biotechnology Stewardship Technical Committee (ABSTC), a coalition of biotech companies who are all Bt corn registrants. Storer says the ABSTC is committed to promoting IRM compliance.

"The ABSTC recognizes that compliance has declined somewhat in recent years due to multiple factors, and we have been proactively working to address this since 2007," says Storer. "We are partnering with other stakeholder groups to deliver to corn farmers a re-invigorated education campaign. As an industry, we want to achieve the highest compliance levels possible."

From what I understand, the catalyst for the UK and Europe revolt against GMOs is the coincidence of several food scares (hoof and mouth disease, mad cow, etc.) and a strong Greenpeace campaign, and that this context has been absent in most other countries (Canada, US, Australia). I personally don't think this is a very sustainable action plan, but... Read More it's also not easily replicated. Also the big push now is for GMOs in Africa. There's a lot of controversy around GMOs in food aid, and there's a lot of discourse around GMOs for food security, especially following last year's food crisis. So there are two key problems, in my opinion. First, educating populations on the problems with GMOs (uncertainty of risks, especially long-term, lack of transparency, environmental issues - especially biodiversity loss, and capital intensive farming - farmers are indebted to big Ag companies). Second is helping keep GMOs out of Africa. Africa's major export market for agr. products is Europe, and Europe relies heavily on their products. If Africa goes GMO, Europe becomes an island of anti-GMOs, and will find itself less able to resist GMOs. (Although my bigger concern with African's taking up GMOs is environmental issues and small farmers being dependent on capital-intensive production, which as we know, weeds out a lot of farmers, per US/Cda/etc.). The really sad thing, though, is that even Europe is starting to take up the GMO discourse after last year's food crisis (for which the argument of insufficient food is totally bogus!). Anyway, it's a big task, but I think it's great that HCHW is educating and sharing this information! Sorry if this is a ramble rant, but this is my area of study and a bit of a passion!

I actually love this article! Reason being, it brings attention to an everyday activity that causes unnecessary pollution and can be unsafe for sensitive populations. It reintroduces the idea of the rake and explains why a rake works just as well as a blower. Who would have thought. Thanks!!!

I agree with you both. When I see people using their blowers with mouth/nose covers it makes one think. Why is it that they cover themselves yet are okay with others breathing it in?
Even when I rake our back yard I sprinkle the ground with water so that I don't lift much dust.

Watch Shelby's story on how she is fighting for a safer environment for her child and her community.

Healthy Childs Mom on a Mission Award was introduced for the first time in 2009. Every year we want to honor one special and inspiring American woman dedicated to creating healthier and happier environments for children ...and families. This year, Healthy Child received 128 submissions from across the country in response to our 2009 Mom on a Mission search. We received many compelling stories about dynamic women working to make their communities healthier and safer for their children. But when we received this submission from John Rodriguez about his wife, Shelby, we knew we'd found our winner.
