I am new to an authentic HOT yoga practice inspired by the Bikram sequence performed in heat exceeding 90-100degrees. I am under the understanding that an instructor I have studied with for years has been leading your sequence styled class (which is also similar to a BIKRAM sequence)...

I totally agree with Mr. Jacopec. I guess, since I'm not a very scientifically inclined person, I really don't need a comprehensive explanation of why the 26 postures work. They just do - for myself, my friends, heck, even for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. :)

The 26-pose sequence is so that every part of the body gets a work out in a systematic way. From warm-up, to building focus, exercising large muscle groups, internal benefits and cleansing. It is comprehensive and efficient. It is certainly not THE set of poses. It is certainly a well thought out sequence and enough for most yoga practitioners.

To say that there is a diminishing return on performing this sequence of poses is like saying one had dinner last night and doesn't have to eat again. Our bodies continue to age and deteriorate, yoga is like a maintenance for our bodies.

Beyond the physical aspect of Bikram yoga, mediation in motion, ability to commend mind and body with complete focus, sharpen awareness of mind and thoughts, how the food consumed the day before affects your asana the next day, how the body and breath are connected, how relaxation actually allowing for deeper sensation. Imaging someday able to perform the entire sequence without any excess movement, no change in the breathing rhythm or elevating of heart rate.... See More

Although Bikram yoga is my primary form of yoga, I continue to practice other forms as well. Many ways lead to Rome. However, what could be a better challenge than attempting to create a harmonic union of body, mind and soul while performing a sequence of poses that is good for my physical body.

This is not an attempt to convince you that these 26 poses is the answer for all.

Unfortunately many Bikram yoga instructors do not have in-depth training in anatomy and alignment as in your exercises science program. Thus can lead to poor experience and injuries for students. It seems that your early experience with Bikram yoga had seeded your doubts.

If you are truly curious about where these 26 poses can take you, I sincerely suggest that you incorporate the knowledge from your study and look deeper than the physical aspect of the 26 asanas.

I have been practicing for about 4 months now going 4-6 days a week.  All of my back-bends (half-moon, camel) had been getting deeper and deeper, but suddenly my lower back is getting very sore and tender.  I noticed after I officially “let go” while doing the back-bend part of half-moon (this...

Your lower back problem is due to your collapse in lower back while doing your back bends.. All of the back bends are meant to stretch the front part of your upper body as well as compression in your spine, but I find that Bikram only tells you to lean back and go back. Our Lumbar spine has all the flexibility to be leaning back into a curve due ... See Moreto the natural curve of our spine. If you focus more on the "Lifting" of your heart towards the sky while you lean back, and hug your shoulder blades wrapping onto your spine while in your back bends, you will feel the whole back bending experience getting easier without collapsing into your lower spine. Just remember that you are not suppose to feel the compression in your lower spine, its only meant to be a hooking bend in the middle and upper spine. Hope this gives you some insight.
Also, ask your instructor about these things, if they were trained properly, they should give you other modifications and explainations.

I would also recommend that you stay off the advance postures until you master the basics of back bends. Your flexibility might fool you while your alignments and strength arent ready for the advance postures.

Sounds like your back is inflamed. Put a ice pack on it will help with the recovery.

The cause could be challenging to determine, could be the yoga or something totally unrelated (like sleeping twisted, sitting too long ... endless possibility). Once you are better, pay closer attention to your daily activities to see what might be the trigger. You may also try having someone spotting you while doing yoga poses to make sure your body is aligned.

Best of luck.

Hi everyone, I just had my first hot yoga class last night.  I went into the room about 15 minutes before class to lay down and acclimate to the heat.  I found that soon after class began I had to sit down quite frequently, and by the floor series I could barely do any of the poses.  I ended up le...

You are not intolerant to the heat, you just need to keep practicing. Everyone's first class is challenging... My first class I had to sit out several poses. Make sure you are drinking enough water. Eventually, you and your body will learn to ignore the heat and the sweat in your eyes and you will be able to focus and do more in every posture than ... See Moreyou thought possible. Stick it out with patience! Try to go in with the attitude that you know the heat might be a little overwhelming, and that it might take several classes to acclimate, but that you're gonna stick it out and beat the heat!

I am convinced that the heat is damaging my hair. I have very fine, thin, wavy, blonde (currently dyed red) hair that has potential for frizz to begin with, but it seems to have gotten considerably worse since I started the hot yoga. It has gotten so bad that I am cutting all my hair off...

I’m having some trouble with this pose.  I do have tight shoulders and neck (very short neck tendons!)  I read the advice posted earlier about not locking the arms which is helpful as I do feel this causes a lot of tension particularly on the backbend part of the pose.  When I go to the right I fi...

I had this problem for many months--to the extent that I often left class with a tension headache from the muscle stress. Ultimately, I found that I needed to do some more neck and shoulder stretches outside class. There are plenty of books out there with neck stretches. I especially find the seated Eagle pose to help--but you do have to engage your muscles quite firmly to get the full effect of the stretch in Eagle...

Why do teachers tell you to lower your body in this posture? All the pictures that I see do not have someone with their torso lowered. I am afraid that I will fall forward and I see other students losing their balance when they try to do what the teacher asks them to do “Lower your body”. Th...

is this about standing bow? If so, you can lower your torso and still arch your back, curve your spine...the trick to not falling forward is to kick hard and reach forward hard.

i broke out in hives three times all over my body during my 4th or 5th week of coming 4 times a week. turned out it was the soap they provided in their shower. it was weird because i had been using it all along and suddenly became sensitive to it. now, i can use it before class... like when i'm not all heated up, but if i use it after i'm in trouble. i bring my own from home now and i'm fine, so far.

I have a backpain problem since 2 years and when in Savasana especially after backbends I get into spasms and pain.

The solution was to take each pose to a very comfortable stretch. And in every posture suck in my stomach.

The inflammation I have in my back ahs gotten better from the Tahitian Noni Juice: www.tni.com/2899389

I also have some lower back pain sometimes in savasana. The teachers told me to modify by widening my feet. They said the most important thing was the stillness, and it was ok to modify the posture to take the pressure off my lower back.

What I found helpful is arching of the lower back. With tail bone sticks out that creates a little arching, then folding at the hips rather than the waist. Thrusting the chest forward and arms behind the ears.

Same thing for coming up. Find that place with a little arch in the back before starting before start moving.

Best of luck.... See More
