--Vladimir Pran, IFES chief of party in the West Bank/Gaza, has issued this comment on the Palestinian Central Elections Commission (CEC)’s announcement that they will not be able to hold the January 2010 presidential and legislative elections:
“Today’s announcement by the Palestinian Central Elections Commission (CEC)... that they will be unable to implement the January 2010 presidential and legislative elections must have been difficult for them to make. Yet, it was a responsible conclusion since Hamas banned the CEC’s activities in Gaza, making it impossible to fulfill certain necessary preconditions to conduct legitimate elections, such as creating a voter registry.”Read More

Obama administration officials breathed a collective sigh of relief Sunday when Iraq's parliament, after weeks of delays, approved a law to hold national elections in January, very likely permitting a major post-election withdrawal of U.S. combat forces from Iraq.
