Last Saturday marked the American Library Association's second annual National Gaming Day, an event designed to bring new faces into the nation's libraries.

"Video games really attract teenage boys, and that's a demographic that doesn't come to the library as much as we'd like," said the branch's youth librarian, Brando...n Digwood, who brought his Nintendo game system from home for the afternoon.Read More

Nine-year old Cody Wallace and his seven-year-old brother Justin spent the day at the library last weekend, but for once they weren't working on book reports. They were playing video games.

National gaming day was celebrated with board games as well as video games at my library. Games promote early literacy and they are also good for ESL students. If you can't get 'em by being straight, go sideways.

I Love Libraries Marblehead's public library, where the talk was given, dates to 1876 and is named for the philanthropist Benjamin Abbot.

In the 1870s, Abbot donated to the town the sum of $103,000, a substantial portion of which was used to build a new town hall on the town training field. The first floor of the stunning new Abbot Hall housed the public library until 1954 when the present library was built on Pleasant Street.

These are bad times for state and local governments to adjust shrinking funds to cover things like fire, police, recycling and libraries. Tax payers are hard pressed and reluctant to accept new millages. I fear that libraries will be one of the things that we value only in hine sight after they are lost.
