Opening Dec. 4 at 8 p.m. in the Musical Arts Center is IU Ballet Theater's annual production of The Nutcracker. The production will feature choreography created specifically for the Jacobs School's dancers by Michael Vernon, chair of the Jacobs School of Music Ballet Department.

IU Opera and Ballet Theater An expansive new production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, a co-production of Indiana University Opera Theater and The Atlanta Opera, will be premiered Nov. 13 at 8 p.m. at the Musical Arts Center in Bloomington. Additional performances in Bloomington are Nov. 14, 20 and 21.

The principles of good and evil are the centerpiece of this Mo...zart masterpiece, which premiered only months before his death in December 1791. Good is represented by the High Priest Sarastro and evil by the Queen of the Night. Two would-be-lovers, Pamina and Tamino, must overcome a set of trials in order to be worthy of true love, encountering the birdcatcher Papageno along the way. Steeped in symbolism, this work is influenced by the principles of Freemasonry, which were very much in vogue at the time and to which Mozart subscribed.
