Idealist.org What happens when career transitions professionals take their own advice? [Thanks and bon voyage to Steve, whose last day at Idealist was Friday!] http://bit.ly/8bP0YM

When I finally made the official decision to move from Portland, OR to Kansas City, MO and therefore to also find new work, I found myself thinking, "Well, you've talked about how to make career transitions for years now. ...

Over the past few days, we’ve focused a good deal on Facebook and Twitter. But we also have profiles on LinkedIn, Myspace, FriendFeed, and other sites. Can you help us think about the best ways to use these profiles to spread this idea and find like-minded people?

Thanks, everyone. From our Vision doc:

Starting in December, we'll be ready to spend 90 days working with everyone to:

1. Create a variety of materials—videos, fliers, posters, presentations—for a global campaign...... Read More

2. Set up Idealist Groups in neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces—wherever people want to start building this network from the ground up.

3. Link and support these groups with local blogs, mailing lists, and other online tools, all focused on connecting people, ideas, and resources in every possible way.

4. Collect inspiring stories, models, and examples of how people and organizations are currently working together in different countries...

5. Do all this in as many languages as possible.

Paula and Kylie, part of the reason we assumed that some folks are using LinkedIn during periods of unemployment is, well, we advise them to do that! :) Our career resources, such as the Idealist Guide to Nonprofit Careers (idealist.org/careerguide), emphasize that online networking tools can help you learn more about your field and find people to ... It's a war on apathy and indifference. People always told me I was the only person that thought this way... and my response was:

"Nah, there has to be a few in each country at least"

I guess I was right. I'm grateful that someone had the vision to make connecting them possible. Thanks!

Many people equate the word idealist with naivety. That is a misinterpretation. A person who is naive doesn't see the world's problems. An idealist sees the worlds problems and wants to do something about them to make the world better.

Melissa, I'm not sure about your region specifically. Have you signed up on the idealist.org/more site? If so, you'll be receiving periodic emails from us, including when we launch Idealist Groups. (You can also follow along at idealist.org/blog.) You could even start an Idealist Group or Community Point in your own backyard! -Julia

Ditto to Fernando's comment--you may want to contact the American Translator's Association (or similar organizations in other countries) about getting professional translations of the site. Many professional translators may be willing to donate their services for the cause.

Hi Naima, Great questions.

1. If you mean “how?” in the big picture sense…we have an outline for how we’d like to roll out the plan between now and May 7-9. You can find it in our Vision (especially page 3): http://www.idealist.org/ICA/root/en/Static/TheVision/default

2. There are indeed many global, issue-based organizations out there doing incredible work at the grassroots and policy levels. Our goal is not to zoom in on one specific issue; rather, we'll be working with groups of people who can serve as connectors, helping individuals who want to get involved find the right way, or place, to do so.... Read More

3. You mentioned funding. There are two stages to funding this initiative, and we discuss them in our FAQ: http://www.idealist.org/ICA/root/en/Static/FAQ/default

Please let me know if any of this doesn't make sense.

Thank you again!

Hi Sarah! Just to piggyback on Peter's lovely comment...

What we'd like to do is create spaces (Community Points) and groups of people (Idealist Groups) where anyone can go to find help once they've decided to take action.

You can find more on our FAQ: http://www.idealist.org/ICA/root/en/Static/FAQ/default... Read More

So, using the playground example: let's say a group of people want to build a playground. They might turn to an Idealist Group for advice on how to access the resources they need; develop a shared vision; or, yes, even mediate conflict should it arise.

Let me know if this is helpful, or if I should try to clarify further. And thanks for your interest!
