Diane Dettmann As an author I enjoy supporting independent bookstores. Woodward's Bookstore and Howardstreet Booksellers in northern Minnesota recently hosted wonderful events featuring my book, Miriam Daughter of Finnish Immigrants. It is listed in the current Midwest Booksellers Association catalog as a midwest favorite. A story of... life during the Great Depression. A great gift for a reader on your list! Check it out.

Jeannine Peters I see that Indie has lists for downloading. As much as I love holding onto a book, I'm starting to look into Kindles and the Sony reader. Any feedback regarding these devices?

With my daily newspaper, I just received an insert entitled, "Holiday Showcase, Books for the season from your local independent bookstore." I flipped through, and guess whose books were featured on the mystery/thriller page? Titles by: James Patterson, Michael Connolly, David Baldacci, Sue Grafton, and Patricia Cornwe...ll. Pretty much the same titles that the big box stores sell en masse. To show my support of independent bookstores, I tour exclusively through them (on my own dime). I only purchase books from independent booksellers. And yet, it strikes me at times like this that it's not really a two way street, is it? Where is the support for the writers who don't automatically make the NY Times list? Why weren't more books by lesser known authors included in your mailer?
I must say, it's terribly frustrating.
