Diane Dettmann

Diane Dettmann As an author I enjoy supporting independent bookstores. Woodward's Bookstore and Howardstreet Booksellers in northern Minnesota recently hosted wonderful events featuring my book, Miriam Daughter of Finnish Immigrants. It is listed in the current Midwest Booksellers Association catalog as a midwest favorite. A story of... life during the Great Depression. A great gift for a reader on your list! Check it out.

Jeannine Peters

Jeannine Peters I see that Indie has lists for downloading. As much as I love holding onto a book, I'm starting to look into Kindles and the Sony reader. Any feedback regarding these devices?

Michelle Gagnon

Michelle Gagnon With my daily newspaper, I just received an insert entitled, "Holiday Showcase, Books for the season from your local independent bookstore." I flipped through, and guess whose books were featured on the mystery/thriller page? Titles by: James Patterson, Michael Connolly, David Baldacci, Sue Grafton, and Patricia Cornwe...ll. Pretty much the same titles that the big box stores sell en masse. To show my support of independent bookstores, I tour exclusively through them (on my own dime). I only purchase books from independent booksellers. And yet, it strikes me at times like this that it's not really a two way street, is it? Where is the support for the writers who don't automatically make the NY Times list? Why weren't more books by lesser known authors included in your mailer?
I must say, it's terribly frustrating.

Michelle, first and formost thanks a million for supporting the indies. Those holiday catalogue inserts are produced by each regional association, and paid for by the publishers, THEY select for the most part which of their books they are going to promote in the catalogue. The lcoal store gets the catalgues as a member of the regional association to help promote holiday shopping, but has little if any say about what is in the catalogue itself.

Thanks for clarifying that, Sam. It's still disheartening, especially considering the fact that one of the bonuses of an independent bookstore is that they tend to discover and promote hidden "gems." And yet that wasn't the focus of this insert. Why recommend the same books people can buy at their local Walmart? I simply don't understand it.

Our regional association is acutely aware of this issue and not only hand picks books from the large publishers that are specifically off the beaten path, but also features those hidden gems from small regional presses that would otherwise not get widespread attention. It CAN be done. If you'd like to see one of our catalogs as an example, I'd be happy to send you one!
