Congresswoman Jackie Speier Proposition 8 wrote discrimination into our state’s Constitution. I am pleased Judge Walker overturned it. The freedom to marry is a fundamental right that every American deserves. Historically, our country has struck down discriminatory efforts to divide the public into first- and second-class citizens, and it should... continue that tradition with marriage equality as well.

Congresswoman Jackie Speier Today I'm introducing the Toxic Metals Protection Act. This legislation is aimed at stopping children's products from having unacceptable levels of toxic heavy metals. It’s time to be smart and aggressive about the risks posed by toxic metals that can cause children harm.

Congresswoman Jackie Speier Why should debtors filing for bankruptcy have their guns not counted as an asset? No earthly reasons other than the NRA likes to win. Look at HR 5827 which just passed the House. Shameful.

July 28 at 5:27pm · Comment ·
    • Rei Kobi Ah, I read the bill. Don't start hoarding guns yet, it only exempts a single rifle, shotgun or pistol with value up to $3,000.
      July 29 at 9:26pm ·
    • Rei Kobi Lorraine & Barbara & Alex: the operative term in the Code is "exempt" and not "exclude" so while you may have to list everything, some of those items will be exempted later.

Congresswoman Jackie Speier The House passed my resolution asking the President to establish an Arts in Education Week in September. Studies have shown that an arts education improves math and verbal SAT scores, and with students in China and other nations pulling ahead, we cannot leave our students at a competitive disadvantage. It equips stud...ents with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in their future careers.

If David O'Malley's stream of consciousness is an example of the typical product of the US education system, then yes, we are in trouble. How is it that someone who can't even piece together a coherent statement was advanced through the sys...tem?

Pesonally, I think the curriculum itself should be well-rounded in the first place, rather than dedicating one week to a particular area. Too many of these "things that should be in the curriculum but may not be" weeks create busy work for already stretched staff and divert resources away from direct student services.

    • Cary Kletter Why is ok for banks like Merrill Lynch (now part of Bank of America) take tax dollars and give it to fat cat bankers as million dollar bonuses?

    • Neil Signo AARP? I was working the Mall before 21, I ran into grand parents that cant retire, so the perosn took part-time jobs with persons our age. Saying ''tolerating those under 21 and not white''... Thats better than the treatment I got at a small business minority owned company 10 hour days and 2pm lunches were common, the minority owner left early, including manager minority.

Congresswoman Jackie Speier For the last month Republicans played political games while out-of-work American workers and their families suffered. Finally, the games are over for the party of ‘no.’ Today, Democrats provided urgent relief to millions of families by voting ‘yes’ to the extension of unemployment benefits.

July 22 at 5:06pm · Comment ·
    • Kathleen Torres-Rogan when does the unemployment benefits turn into welfare. and, how much longer for creation of jobs. the party of "stimilus spending and promises of low unemployment" have not come through for the AMericans. California is the only state where is keeps going up. What are you going to do about it? I never hear of any of your solutions to create work, it's all about spending money government does not have. Prepare for America's financial collapse.
      July 22 at 10:10pm ·
    • David Todd Wow. You picked a fine time to panic, Kathleen. To prevent America's financial collapse, do you think US should pull out of Afghanistan and Iraq AND eliminate the Bush tax cuts in order to cut spending and boost revenue, or was it okay to crank up two consecutive wars while cutting taxes?

Congresswoman Jackie Speier It’s extremely important that the first person to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau be a bold, effective communicator who embodies reform and can chart its course during this critical stage. No one is better equipped to direct this endeavor than Elizabeth Warren. She conceived the idea, fought tirelessly fo...r its creation and knows what to do. I strongly urge that President Obama appoint her immediately.

Congresswoman Jackie Speier Widows of Veterans are eligible to receive different types of benefits, including a VA Death Pension, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, and Funeral Expenses. Below is a link that better explains what the benefits are. A widow can contact our office for assistance or they can call the general VA number 1-800-827-1000.

As a Veteran with a 100% service rating I see Veterans wives and husbands as the bravest people Veterans have in our lives. The fact they care for us then at death get nothing until very recently was very scary for us.

As a Veteran my servi...ce was short compared to the life long care my spouse has given me. To see my life's mate receive nothing for that care would have broken my heart.

Thank you for your help in this matter.
