James Howe Photography It's back to school time in Ann Arbor, so here is a shot of the new North Quad dormitory built on the site of the old Ann Arbor High/Frieze Building.

For the past few days I’ve been playing with a Nikon 24mm PC-E lens. I like to shoot architecture and I thought it would be fun to try a lens which would let me do some perspective correction in camera rather than in Photoshop. I still have a lot to learn about using this lens, but I really like i...

James Howe Photography This image was taken on a recent trip to Mackinac Island. The treatment may be a bit cliche, but I think it fits the subject.
Ok, it's probably cliche but I really think the antique photo look goes well with the subject. For those who don't know, this is the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in northern Michigan. The hotel was featured in the Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour movie entitled 'Some...where in Time'. The hotel, I ...

James Howe Photography With school about to start at the University of Michigan I thought it appropriate to post an image of the Stephen Ross Business School.
It's nearly fall in Ann Arbor and that means that the students will be flocking back to campus. This, of course, means that parking and driving around campus will once again be a challenge. In the meantime, I'll enjoy the little time left before the onslaught. This shot shows the Stephen Ross Sch...

James Howe Photography Just updated my photo blog with a new post taken in Middle Village, Michigan. Middle Village is an old Ottawa Indian village near Good Hart, Michigan (north of Harbor Springs). The image shows a decaying structure that probably dates back to the late 1800's.

My wife and I have been visiting the Good Hart area in northern lower Michigan on and off for many years. We used to rent a house on Lake Michigan in an area known as Middle Village. Almost across the road from the house we rented was an old, decaying structure. It wasn’t until this year that I ...

James Howe Photography Here one more shot from the old Northern Michigan Asylum in Traverse City. I took this from one of the porches on Building 50 in a part which has yet to be renovated.

This is another shot from the old Northern Michigan Asylum in Traverse City. The design of the building included fenced in porches at the end of each floors. I’m sure when the asylum was open they would wheel patients out here for some air, but that’s just speculation. To take this shot I backed ...

James Howe Photography Very cool video showing some of the special effects used in HBO's production of 'John Adams'
HBO posted this interesting behind-the-scenes video that gives a glimpse into the kind of special effects that went into filming the popular miniseries John Adams. It’s pretty crazy how they construct entire realities around the actors using CGI.

This is an interior shot taken at the Northern Michigan Asylum in Traverse City, Michigan. The asylum consisted of several buildings, some of which are currently under renovation for commercial use. Many of the buildings are still in rough shape, including this one. I was able to get a shot of th...

James Howe Photography Just got back from a vacation in Northern Michigan. Visited a development in Traverse City called Traverse City Commons. Didn't realize it when I first heard about the place that it is a redevelopment of the old state insane asylum. Nice redevelopment, but there are still some creepy undeveloped buildings.
jameshowephotography.com
Traverse City, Michigan used to be the home of the state mental hospital once known as the Northern Michigan Asylum for the Insane. The hospital closed in 1989 and the buildings on the campus sat dormant. Recently there has been a push to repurpose the site as a combination of retail, housing and ...

James Howe Photography Currently on vacation and trying to add some new images as time and internet allow. I just updated my blog with this new image taken on Mackinac Island, Michigan.

My wife and I are taking a short vacation in northern lower Michigan. We just spent a couple of days on Mackinac Island, a place with no cars and limited internet. The island has a wonderful collection of Victorian ‘cottages’, some of which are larger that most people’s houses. I took this shot o...

James Howe Photography The new North Quad dormitory at the University of Michigan will be opening soon. Looks like they did a nice job.
This shot shows the new North Quad dormitory on the campus of the University of Michigan. I've been wanting to get a shot from this angle without all the fencing and construction related materials. Unfortunately the sun is moving further south now so the late evening light doesn't reach into the i...

James Howe Photography Just posted a new image to my blog. It's an image of a barn which had been painted to look like Raphael's 'Castiglione'. Sadly the barn is no longer around. Check it out.

Years ago, in the late 60′s and early 70′s, an artist by the name of Doug Tyler painted several barns in Southeastern Michigan. His work included the Mona Lisa, Eisan’s ‘Standing Woman’, John Copley’s ‘Paul Revere’ and the one you see above, ‘Castiglione’ by Raphael. This barn, which unfortunately...

James Howe Photography Just posted a new shot to Flickr that I took at the Gilmore Car Museum earlier this year. One of my favorite cars to shoot because it has so many interesting details.
This is a picture of one of my favorite cars at the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corner, Michigan (between Battle Creek and Kalamazoon) This picture was taken at the 2010 Classic Car Club of America show held at the Gilmore. The car is a 1935 Dusenberg SJ564 Convertible Couple. For processing I ...

James Howe Photography A new image taken at this years Eyes on Design car show held at the Edsel and Eleanor Ford Estate

One of the nicest classic car shows in Michigan is the annual Eyes on Design show held at the estate of Edsel and Eleanor Ford. They always have an interesting theme and a great collection of cars spanning old to new. This particular shot was taken at this years show and shows a collection of 50′s...
