Jeff Campana Ceramics Spending my vacation from the studio in the main classroom studio, making some "straight forward" pots out of some fake Yixing clay with Hawthorne sigillata and soda fire. They will be available at the U of L Holiday Sale, December 11-12. Fun!

Shawn, I make sig by putting the clay in a ball mill with water for 24-36 hours. Purists will say this doesn't work, but I'm here to tell you otherwise. I doubt you would get much yield through syphoning. The flashing effects of hawthorne are insanely rich, deep, awesome.

I'll have to give it a try when I can get access to a ball mill, thanks :) Would love to see some pics

Thanks Jeff!! The kids had so much fun (and frustration) making these. My first demo unglued itself in the kiln. I imagine how you feel just before you open the kiln- holding your breath to see if your babies survived. Thanks for sharing this! :)

Haha, yeah. The U of L students see me with a sick, worried expression on my face and know that I'm about to peek into the kiln. I'm still losing about half of what I make. It's a weird mixture of grieving and celebrating. The ones that actually survive are nice enough for me to accept all the loss involved.

Your work should be in movies! *smile* It would definitely be nominated for best pottery. (Another potter here on FB thought of that. I just don't remember who. Sorry)

Melissa Thomas I love your pots! I was wondering if you had, and were willing to give out, any recipes for a yellow glaze. I have been experimenting with all different colorants and haven't been able to come up with anything :-( Do you make your own glazes? If so let me know, I would really appreciate any help or tips you have! :-) Thanks!

Naples Yellow Stain worked pretty well for me, but otherwise, the only way to get yellow in cone 6 ox is to use inclusion stains. Either way, the color will appear to be made by little yellow chunks floating in the glaze rather than a clear yellow glass. In some glaze bases, it looks pretty nice, others, not so much.
