Jeff Flake Pres. Obama says that earmarks for private companies must be "competitively bid." Hmmm. Not sure what that means. Not sure he does either. Well see...

Weren't these the same earmarks that President Obama campaigned "against"?

How on earth can you competitively bid an earmark? Are they going to release RFPs on Earmarks? Of course not because that would call too much attention to them, too much scrutiny.

BTW, I commend the SF Examiner for the offer to publish the names of PMA-Earmarked members of Congress. Too bad your colleagues will never allow that to happen. But I commend your efforts even if they appear to be an exercise in futility.

Since when is an earmark like a contract? What does a potential recipient propose to perform as a service to the American people in exchange for this largesse?

To be sure, President Obama has some interesting definitions for lots of things: publicly financed campaign, stimulus, lobbyist, and of course change. We shouldn't be surprised if his definition for "earmark" and "competitively" are a little off also. In the spirit of fairness, I've always been frustrated by the Gerson/Brooks/Bush definition of "conservatism."

Jeff,

Many of us are really hoping that you make a run for President in 2012. We sure could use you here in California. Keep up the good work. We're watching.

Rep. Flake, do you have a twin you can send to Georgia and clean up the lobbyist/earmark mess there? *grin*

maybe the president should "keep the 'change'" - on second thought, given his big spending that will hit my tax bill, i should probably hold on to all the change i can for now!

Jeff, it's great to hear you've backed HR 1207! And since I also live in Georgia, I second Colleen's suggestion above.

Why would the government even need to be involved in private business. Join http://www.goooh.com and help us eliminate special interest from government.

He also says he wants people to be on the lookout, and report, anyone who's saying anything that's "false" about the health care bill. So that doesn't surprise me.

Where do you stand on Glenn Becks "the 5 pledges"? 1) I believe in a balanced budget and therefore will vote for a freeze in government spending until that goal is realized. 2) I believe government should not increase the financial burden on its citizenry during difficult economic times therefore I will oppose all tax increases until our economy has rebounded.

3) I believe more than four decades of U.S. dependence on foreign oil is a travesty therefore I will support an energy plan that calls for immediately increasing usage of all domestic resources including nuclear energy7, natural gas, and coal as necessary.

4) I believe in the sovereignty and security of our country and therefore will support measures to close our borders except for designated immigration points so we will know who is entering and why I will vehemently oppose any measure giving another country, the United Nations, or any other entity, power over U.S. citizens.

Well, you've heard of "no-bid" contracts, havent you? Competition would bring the prices down. And save the country a lot of money

Dear Congressman:

I am deeply disturbed that the Republican Study Committee has accepted Kay Granger as a new member. I have always considered the RSC to be a fine organization of truly conservative congressmen but that is no longer the case.

First, Kay Granger is openly PRO-CHOICE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTNRytKDk70) . How does that fit in with the RSC’s “Family Values” position? Openly supporting abortion is not a family value in any way. As a matter of fact being pro-abortion (or the politically correct “pro-choice”) is decidedly ANTI family..... See More

Second, Kay Granger is one of the most prolific spenders in Congress, not just among Republicans but out of all Congressmen she still ranks in the top 50. Her earmarks on projects like the Botanical Gardens and the Trinity River Project are ridiculous and have absolutely nothing to do with the federal government’s responsibilities. All she has done for 7 terms in Congress is vote for increased wasteful spending and ever growing government.

Third, she voted FOR TARP. She now boldly proclaims how she voted against the stimulus and other government attempts to take over but the fact remains that she voted for a government takeover of the banking system – how does that fit in with the RSC position?

It’s obvious to anyone looking that Kay Granger is attempting to “remake” herself in this election year when the vast majority of Americans are looking for true conservative leadership. It won’t work – we won’t be fooled by her “too late” change of heart. In a recent article about wasteful government spending in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram when she was contacted by the reporter for comment – she refused to respond. That lack of leadership coupled with her positions that are completely contrary to the RSC positions makes me wonder if maybe the other members of the RSC have forgotten what happened in the last 2 election cycles to congressman who forgot their conservative principles.

Remember NY-23? Who did you endorse? The acceptance of Kay Granger’s membership can and will cause the same kind of backlash that republicans who endorsed the RINO in that race got. I hope you seriously reconsider this and rescind her membership before it’s too late.

Sincerely,
Michael Gallops
