My wife and I attended Friday night's showing of Pandora's Box at Discovery Green. KUHF is to be congratulated on bringing in the Golden Arm Trio. Although I thought the music sometimes overwhelmed the film rather than enhancing it, it was still a worthwhile experiment. And the evening was lovely. But I shall almost certainly not be attending any ... See Morefuture showings. This is because the projection of the film was so dreadful. It was shown against a screen stretched across a blow-up frame, which caught the wind and billowed in and out. It was like seeing a film projected against the mainsail of a ship at sea. There were two visible seams that marred the image at all times. The rear projection device, at least in the outdoors, cast a watered down image so that everything was gray against gray, not the sharp black and white that the film needed. But all of these problems could be attributed to the nature of the equipment available for an outdoor screening. Far, far worse than any of these was the fact that the film was shown with the wrong aspect, so that throughout the images were unnaturally elongated vertically. These days video is contrived to be shown on a wide screen or the standard aspect. When the viewer makes the wrong decision (or simply does not check or care) the image is stretched. Most common are images stretched wide screen that were not meant for a screen of that proportion. This is why newscasts on the airport monitors have faces pulled long ways across the wide screen monitors. Here it was just the opposite. It was constantly annoying to see the lovely Louise Brooks's face squeezed so that it had roughly the proportions of a cold capsule. I am not sure I would again wish to see a treasured movie shown against a wavy balloon. But I am certain I would not trust the experience to whoever was in charge and did nothing to correct the obvious maladjustment of the aspect. Still, as I say, KUHF is to be congratulated on trying this involvement of the Golden Arm Trio. I just wish the visuals had not been so poorly handled.
