on the topic “Climate Change and Renewable Energy -- A View From the United States”
Prior registration is mandatory at hamburgpa@state.gov
before Friday, October 30, 2009, COB.

Ms. Benson is expert ...in a wide range of energy issues including those related to the organization, law, and regulation of electricity and natural gas markets, and also those related to power procurement and competitive requests for proposals (RFPs).
Her work includes over twenty-five years experience managing strategic, electricity and natural gas programs. Most recently, she has served as Independent Monitor for utility power supply RFPs for combined acquisitions of approximately 6300 MW of capacity. Prior to this, she specialized in managing competitive power supply procurements for both investor-owned and municipal utilities.
Ms. Benson has represented United States clients on both the buying and selling sides of power markets in California, Delaware, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and the south central region of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, and international clients in British Columbia, Quebec, and Germany.
She has worked with transmission issues in Mid-Atlantic, Northeast and Southern regions of the United States, and has consulted with utilities and government officials in Germany, Switzerland and at the European Union on power issues, including those associated with the August 2003 blackout in the United States and its implications for the U.S. and for Europe, and U.S. energy policy as embodied in the Energy Policy Act of 2005.
Ms. Benson is Chairman of the Services ITAC Subcommittee on Environmental Review of Trade Agreements, a group that assesses environmental impacts in the U.S. of liberalized trade in services. Ms. Benson was selected to represent U.S. services industries at the two most recent ministerial meetings of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Hong Kong, China and Cancun, Mexico.
The roundtable discussion will include climate change, renewable energy, the future of nuclear power, as well as that of coal- and natural gas-fired generation, "Smart Grid" issues, updates on U.S. federal legislation, but also views from states that have led on this issue, and from the electricity industry and smaller scale efforts to diversify energy sources.
