London Yerta While Estelle was little she was quite a handful. When she got older she found a journal that had belonged to her mother in which her mom was concerned about what to do with her and refers to her sister as a "twinkling star". Turns out that her active childhood helped to give her focus and experience. So she became a "Shining star" on screen and stage.

recalls the year we unveiled our newly renovated 'dream' kitchen, completed just days earlier. With the turkey prepped, the stuffing in the pan, all ready to go into the new ovens, I reached up to the cabinet for a lid for the Corningware baking dish, it slipped from my hand and shattered -- broken glass all over the u...ncooked turkey and stuffing! The kosher market was closed Thanksgiving day, so I drove to Giant and found a frozen kosher Empire turkey, but had no idea how to thaw it. The guy behind in line asked what I was doing. I explained my dilemma. He instructed me on how to thaw a 12 pound frozen breast by soaking and microwaving in 20 minute increments. Back home we ate our meal backwards, starting with the pie and the extras, and hours later, the turkey. Needless to say, it was a long day in the kitchen while everyone else watched football ...Read More

I would have been tickled to death to start Thanksgiving dinner with pie rather than having to watch my knuckle-dragging stepfather try to carve the turkey with all the grace and elegance of a doped up Edward Scissorhands.

Ah, Thanksgiving... Read More…one of the reasons I’m in therapy. Childhood memories fill me with dread even now at the approach of that holiday. My mother’s sideshow carnival relatives and their mutant offspring descended upon our home like zombies. It wasn’t because the food was good; it wasn’t. My mother cooked everything to the consistency of charcoal. The scary relatives showed up because they were too lazy to prepare meals for themselves. They didn’t even have the decency to bring a dish; they brought Thanksgiving beer. Granted, it probably killed the aftertaste of the burnt offerings on the table but it generally led to The Thanksgiving Fights. It usually started with the mini-mutants fighting under the dining table and one relative loudly commenting about how another relative needed to learn to control his (bleeping) kids. The usual response was that the offended relative needed to learn how to control his (bleeping) drinking and his (bleeping) mouth. And the bleeping Round One bell rang. After a few more rounds of beer and arguing, the offended relatives staggered out the door and the sober wives drove them back to their lairs until the next year and then it all started again. Thanksgiving was my “Groundhog Day”.

Several years ago, my family celebrated Thanksgiving with my best friend's family. "Aunt" Carole cooked the turkey, and after the 7 hours of cooking time, my mom was taking out the dressing, and out fell the bag of gibblets (nice and baked!). So she went to the other end and found that the legs were still securely fastened together with that clear... Read More plastic thingy that holds the legs together (clearly, I've never cooked a turkey before...) Which begs the question: how did she stuff it in the first place? It still tasted great though!
