Knots can be traced back thousands years with uses ranging from holding clothing together to record keeping. Today knot theory is an exciting new branch in mathematics with roots in both geometry and topology and applications stretching into some of the hottest fields, including DNA research, synthetic chemistry, flui...d mechanics, and cutting edge physics. In this talk, we will define a mathematical knot, discuss what it means for two knots to be the same, and devise a strategy for telling different types of knots apart.
