Latitude 38 Magazine Sorry, I totally forgot about FB with all the drama. We got the call around 10 am Weds about the EPIRB alert. Worked most of that day to help any way we could. Too many of the fleet were too far south to be of assistance. Thrilled everyone was rescued safely! What a random thing to be attacked by whales! We'll have a full feature on the story for the December issue.

Have you read "The Swarm" by Frank Schätzing? The whale attack reads like the opening of this page turner. What will happen next?

Latitude 38 Magazine The Ha-Ha is off and it looks like it could be a wild ride. The Poobah is encouraging everyone to stop for a day or so around Tuesday/Wednesday to let 15-ft seas settle down. "Some of the rough riders, like the one entrant who's circumnavigated four times, might tough it out," he said, "but we just want everyone to have a good time!"

Latitude 38 Magazine BAM! Done with another issue! What to do now? Go for a sail on the new Antrim 49 Rapid Transit? Sail in this weekend's Great Pumpkin? Meet a circumnavigator who just transited the NW Passage? Or maybe kick off the 'Sweet Sixteen' Baja Ha-Ha? The answer is ALL OF THEM!

What are you gonna do?

Latitude 38 Magazine We're on deadline so most of us were chained to our desks in the dungeon, though Race Editor Rob Grant escaped for a few hours to shoot photos of a newly launched boat. What kind of sailing did you get in this weekend before the rain hit?

Latitude 38 Magazine Just posted a great story of a new sailor's first storm at sea. What a character!

Source: www.latitude38.com
The last thing anybody with a boat in Baja or with a boat entered in the Baja Ha-Ha wants to hear is that Rick, now a tropical storm 315 miles SSE of Acapulco, is expected to develop into a hurricane by Sunday.

Latitude 38 Magazine Here's a direct link to the list of school supplies needed in Turtle Bay.

A lot of southbound boats, headed for cruising in Mexico this winter, have asked for ways to donate needed items to the children's schools in Baja. We have friends that live and have a small business in Bahia Tortugas and we contacted them about giving back. ...

Latitude 38 Magazine Phwew! Some carnage in Richardson Bay. See the pix in today's 'Lectronic. Are you heading south for the winter? If so, consider dropping off school supplies in Turtle Bay. Details also in 'Lectronic.

As all of us in Northern California know, we got pounded by what was a combination of a very early winter storm and the remnants of a Japanese typhoon. The results were record one-day amounts of rain for October, winds to 67 knots, and seas outside the Gate to 14 feet.

Latitude 38 Magazine Facebook acting strange - let's try this again: Despite the fog & clouds, the Bay was packed this weekend for Fleet Week. Did you go out? More importantly, is your boat tucked safely away for tomorrow's storm? Stay safe!

Latitude 38 is an outstanding forum for boating news and reader shared stories of fun on the water. As one reader I recommend you take your political view elsewhere and take the time to share your positive, fun, scary, adventures on the water. There are plenty of other outlets for your views on things political.

October marks the 20th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake. While it had nothing to do directly with sailing, it touched the marinas, businesses and lives of sailors. We'll take a look back at that day and its aftermath for boaters on San Francisco Bay. If your life as a sailor - or of someone you know - was affe...cted by the earthquake, please tell us about it. A friend of mine was on his boat at Grand Marina in Alameda when LP hit...he really got bounced around. Spreaders on his boat got tangled with a shroud on the boat in the slip next to him. He was lucky it wasn't worse... I think the marinas here took more from the quake then any structures in Alameda.
Yes, SF got the media hype, but SC took the hardest hit. 4 minutes into the 3rd game of the world series SF/Oak. Not something you ever forget.

Remember it well, just entering the channel to Emeryville when the boat moved up and down like it was being lifted from below. Then the thunder like clap of either the Cypress structure falling or that section of the Bay Bridge. If we had happen to look that direction we may have seen it down. My wife knew it was a quake but I thought maybe not. I should know to listen to her by now!! Stayed on the bay for a few days following and it was indeed surreal.

More "Captains looking for Crew" this year than last, wasn't quite so "intense". This party has almost outgrown the venue though.
