Legal Voice It’s official! Washington voters passed Referendum 71, including more than 230,000 people from outside of Western Washington. Without those votes, the measure would not have passed. Thank you to *ALL* of Washington for supporting R-71!

Legal Voice With over 300,000 ballots still to be counted, it's looking more and more like a victory for the side of equality. But what's with all that yellow east of the mountains?

I’ve lived on or near Capitol Hill for some time now. I often refer to it as “the hill,” though I’m clear on the fact that there are 7 different hills here in Seattle. It’s ...

A friend of mine had a better take on it: without the votes of the brave minority in those yellow counties, Ref-71 would have failed. Whether they support our cause or simply think that the government has no business running other people's lives, they should be honored for their courage.

Indeed -- thanks, Rick, for pointing that out! And we're doing an analysis of how much progress has been made since we lost I-677 in 1997. Approval rates for LGBTQ rights increased in every county but one.

Legal Voice Guess what? Only TWENTY PERCENT of ballots have been returned thus far. Know what that means? That means that your vote counts FIVE TIMES as much! Make sure that all the people in your life have voted. And remind them why it's important to Approve R-71 and vote no on I-1033!

Legal Voice What are you dressing up as this Hallowe'en? Janet bids farewell to her kids' cuddly days as lions and tigers and bears. Now it's all about gender.

Hallowe’en approaches, and with it, the usual excitement for kids (sugar! lots of it!) and trepidation for parents (sugar! lots of it!). And, of course, there’s the perennial challenge of what costume to wear.

Legal Voice We can't say it enough, Washington: Please vote yes on Referendum 71 to preserve domestic partnership rights! Ballots must be postmarked by November 3rd, so take a few minutes this weekend to vote.

Legal Voice More good news today on our pharmacy refusal case! The Ninth Circuit reaffirmed its earlier ruling, and supported what we've been saying all along: patients have a right to lawful medication.

Justice Souter (the same one whose bobblehead my wife won at the auction on Saturday) gave a wonderful keynote address to this year's American Bar Association annual meeting on this very topic. He compared the New Hampshire town in which he grew up, whose town meeting moderator instilled in everyone in town the concept of due process/fundamental fairness, to civic education in most of the country today.
