The Legal Watercooler
I caught this post this morning warning, urging attorneys to not lower their rates to retain a client. It's the old adage: If a client comes to your firm for price, it will leave your firm for price.
I don't necessarily agree with this. I believe in a free market. When the economy was flush and the work was flowing, the...re was truth in this adage. But the economy is still in jeapordy, work is slow and law firms continue to lay off staff.
Is this old adage still true? If so, then why are AmLaw 100 lawyers leaving their firms to start new practices with lower rates? Your thoughts??Read More

If a new client demands a "discount", color it unsophisticated and a pain in the ass. Refer it to that firm down the street you just never liked.

The Legal Watercooler
For those of you on my Facebook, or who follow me on Twitter,
you know how proud I am that my DD1 (darling daughter #1) was elected
vice president of her student body at the local elementary school.
What
astounds me, however, is the speech that my 4th grader wrote, without
my assistance, and how it aligns so well with what I'm trying to
accomplish as a legal marketer, and as the author/editor of The Legal Watercooler.

Welcome to The Legal Watercooler -- a place where we can grab a cup of coffee and share in a little bit of industry chat. Whether you're an in-house legal marketing professional, lawyer or service provider, we can all use a breather in the day to catch up around the watercooler.

The Legal Watercooler
Ever go to a cocktail party or conference reception and there's "that
guy" or "that girl" who monopolizes the conversation talking about
work? You're standing there, stuck. Drink in hand, you scan the room
looking for an excuse to make a graceful escape.
I’m friends with “that guy” on Facebook. In fact, I’m friends with a few people like that on Facebook.

The Legal Watercooler I am getting a lot of comments both on-line and off in regards to Martindale-Hubbell. One thing is clear: they need to get their messaging right.

The Legal Watercooler
For many years I have watched Martindale-Hubbell struggle with how to
modernize and commoditize their 140-year old directory in a Web 1.0,
and now a Web 2.0, world. From my vantage point, it is clear that Martindale-Hubbell is holding a lawyer’s AV Peer Review Rating hostage to drive “paid profiles in the Martindale-Hubb...ell directory,” which will give access to the “premium functions” within Martindale Connected, their answer to LinkedIn, Legal OnRamp, and other social networking sites.Read More

The Legal Watercooler Why, why isn't this intuitve??? If you're making rain at a law firm your job is more secure than if you're a service partner.

The Legal Watercooler I haven’t really been following the debate of whether or not microblogging (Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook “updates”) is/will/can kill blogging. Are they complimentary platforms, or mutually exclusive??

The Legal Watercooler How has social media changed your life and how you do business?? I know that in my personal life, social media has opened up my world; as a legal marketer, I am still exploring how to translate these new tools for my lawyers and my law firm.

The Legal Watercooler I sat in on this program yesterday. There were some great tid-bits that came out of it ... but what is really fascinating me these days is how media is changing. Not just in our industry, but everywhere. Lessons to learn, people, lessons to learn. http://blip.tv/file/2690577
