Robert Fox will be presenting "One Man Mining". The program is appropriate for students, 4th grade and up, but adults will also enjoy this learning experience. Drawing on his training, education, and work experience, Mr. Fox will arrive dressed as a Mining Superintendent from 1909, complete with some of the mining and ...safety equipment that was utilized at the time of the Cherry Mine Disaster. His first-person presentation will be about forty minutes in length, as he talks about mining from the period in his search for "employees" for his mine. Volunteers from the audience will be asked to "apply" for positions as a mule driver, slate picker, and a miner.
Mr. Fox will then step out of character and talk about the tools he carries and additional equipment displayed in the room. His presentation is based on twenty-five years (1972-1996) working in the coal mines of southern Illinois, including four years in engineering and four years in management, including experience as a surveyor. He has ten years experience on a Mine Rescue Team. Following his career as a miner, Mr. Fox was retained by Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, as a researcher. Now retired from full-time employment, he is in his thirteenth year with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, Office of Coal Marketing, taking his presentation throughout the state of Illinois. He has appeared at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Rend Lake College, and a number of schools and other venues.
