Gabriel Haigazian I'm going to Antarctica in January, with Lindblad. Would like to invest in a great pair of binoculars. Anybody have suggestions / recommendations on what I need to be looking for when purchasing a pair?

I"m a big fan of Pentax waterproof binocs. They have great optics and are far less expensive than Leica, Zeiss or Swarovski. They are a bit heavy, but that can be mitigated by using a harness rather than the traditional neck strap. I love the Pentax 8 x 42 DCF WP II binoculars. The 8x magnification is perfect for most users (especially on a moving platform like a ship), and the "42" indicates excellent light gathering properties. Waterproofing is a big plus when going ashore by Zodiac, especially in a place like Antarctica. Be sure to try them out before the trip, so you know how to focus them quickly and easily.

Lindblad sells the harness on our LEXGear website

Lindblad Expeditions We transported Paul Nicklen to the far reaches of the planet while he worked on his new book "Polar Obsession" (thank you for sharing your jaw-dropping stories with our guests along the way, Paul!). The video link below shows - in vivid detail - what it's like to be a National Geographic photojournalist. Paul's exhibit... is on display at National Geographic Headquarters in Washington DC now through Feb, 2010.

Lindblad Expeditions Travelers in Galapagos were in the right place at the right time yesterday, as a mother sea lion gave birth to a pup (see Daily Expedition Report link below for a photo). When in your travels have you found yourself "in the right place at the right time"?

hi Judi! Reports from the ship said the Drake Passage crossing this week should have been called the "Drake Lake" Passage crossing... in other words, the seas were calm! If you'd like to track the Daily Expedition Reports during your friend's voyage, please visit http://www.expeditions.com/der.

Get a netbook to download your pictures on while at sea. You won't need to carry along extra SD or flashcards. You will want lots of capacity for pictures. On our trip over 1,000 pics was the norm!

Pick up a couple of local newspapers the day of your departure in Guayaquil to take to the staff on board the ship, they REALLY appreciate them! Also, be sure to have a waterproof bag of some sort for your camera while riding in the pangas, on our 4 trips to the Galapagos we've seen 2 good cameras ruined by folks that didn't want to take the extra minute to slip the camera in a bag.
