How does Sidux blow Ubuntu away? It's based off of the same effin platform as Ubuntu. Everything Debian based is the same shit, but different looks and feel, that's all. What you should be arguing, is that Debian is the best Linux distro ever, since the majority of Linux distros are based from it.

Don't mind the title of the article, it's actually a funny and true look at Linux

GNU/Linux, more commonly known simply as Linux, is a free operating system and gateway into a dimension comprised almost entirely of brain-rape and penguins.

I am a new user and 9.10 is a lot easier to deal with then the last version. Installed Flash. Still lost on how to go about changing the skin via emerald and gnome, and have not been able to get the DVD capabilities yet. The distro should be made more universal in my opinion.

Some of the problems with getting things working is that Ubuntu and many other Linux distros don't include proprietary drivers needed for many movie formats. You need to learn how to add "nonfree" and 3rd party software to the Synaptic Package Manager's > Settings > Repositories

Goggle and Apple both contribute to Open Source Software and the MAC is built on the UNIX operating system. Software Freedom includes the right to charge money for it if anyone will pay for it and Google is obviously taking advantage of that right now Most iPhone users don't know they are using a UNIX system either.

Farshad, I don't think that's exactly true. I don't have anything against Google, but their business model is different. They make stuff and give it away for free. That is part of their model. They make money off of advertising.
It is to their advantage to get everyone hooked on their free apps. They are nice apps and its a great model. Why not ... See Morerelease them back into open source community? Someone will make them better and then more people will use them--more cash for Google. The software isn't really their deal.
Apple, on the other hand, has a hand in both hardware and software. They make nice software, sell it cheap to get people buying their hardware. They put a lot of money into software as an incentive to buy the whole "experience". They probably don't give back as much, because they are protecting their products (I think they still maintain CUPS though, in some capacity).
I can understand your feelings and you are right. No one gives back like Google does, but its more of a business decision than Google being the "good guys".

Jeff Carlson I hope this isn't inappropriate here. My company has several job openings for really good Linux sysadmins. We are located in the San Fernando Valley portion of Los Angeles, CA, USA. Send me a message if you or someone you know is interested.

It's okay if you are not a headhunter and this is a real job opening, not a resume collecting effort for some government contract bid. We will leave this up for now, but we would like to know the details about the opening,

I am not a head hunter. This is for two open positions on my team, plus one on the applications team. I'm motivated by not wanting to be the only guy on-call all the time, not some bonus if I bring someone else in. Don't try to discuss salary with me because I'm not the hiring manager, and I can't promise anything in that regard. All I can say ... See Moreis it's an exciting company to work for, we use a lot of open source, and the team we have is really great.

Details are at http://www.reachlocal.com/careers/11, and I guess we have some developer positions as well.

William Dowden

William Dowden Just installed (recently) Fedora 11 in a dual boot mode on my dual hard drive desktop; it recognized just about all my hardware and got me really current with the latest Linux stuff. However, I did have to put in an old ATI Rage Pro video card because the installed video driver would not recognize the video chip on the cheap motherboard I had.

We did a google search:

Maybe something there will help you, some of it is kind of complex. Basically it's a Windows format and you have to find something to make an application like Mplayer to recognize it. Some of the articles claim success - Good Luck -

Corey Bender I would seem to have to say that my favorite distro(s) are Jaunty and Mint. I have the best luck with these 2. I try to get along with Fedora because my course work uses it but I find myself doing as much as I can in Ubuntu over Fedora!
