NDV is spread primarily through direct contact between healthy birds
and the bodily discharges of infected birds, almost always where there are large concentrations of birds kept in confinement, such as
commercially raised chickens. Of course precautions should always be taken by all chicken owners to interrupt the possi...ble transmission of disease by using common sense like washing hands, keeping a dedicated pair of shoes for walking out to the coop, etc. This being said, the chances of droppings from a few backyard chickens coming in contact with commercial poultry are incredibly slim. But if you want more expert advice, we suggest you contact Ron Kean at the Univ. of Wis. Ron is the Extension Poultry Specialist, a supported of urban backyard chickens, and an adviser to commercial operations.

A group of Chickens Lovers in Evanston IL is trying
to legalize backyard chickens. One of the city environmental board
member called the Dept of Ag of IL to explore this idea. Someone in this office said that he is strongly opposes backyard
chickens because they can spread Newcastle Disease
to the entire Illinois poultry... industry. I’ll appreciate any comments and help in this matter.
