That's in the Bay of Campeche. Not too close to the Bahamas. The trackline looks way closer to the keys than that.

Marine Meganet Ok, now we are seriously worried for Belize's fish. We just found out last night in a town council meeting that there are apparently 3 Jamaican fishing companies in country, not just one...traps, deep water longline, trawlers...A meeting to discuss this situation of concern is scheduled for 3pm, wed 9th in Punta Gorda's Parrish Hall. Come all who can.

Marine Meganet The local fishing and conservation communities are collectively very worried about the impacts that a new set of fishers and fishing gears will have on Belize. Our resources are already under tremendous pressures and now we have 5 Jamaican boats that have arrived to fish with large traps and agreed to purchase 40,000 l...bs of fish a month for 15 years. This is not a sustainable venture.

Worse than bad, could be devastating. Why was the Placencia Cooperative by-passed on this? (Maybe because they know better?) What's wrong with the Rio Grande Cooperative? They should know better, too!

Marine Meganet The close up map of Veracruz shows the location of SPOT tags 6215. If you know anyone in that area wanting to look for and retrieve the tag and of course receive an early Christmas present (reward $$$), please let me know.

Marine Meganet

Marine Meganet Time for an update on the old SPOT tagged whale sharks. All tags are now off and drifting around the GOM, even old 6225 who visited the Cayman trench but now appears caught in the loop current. I am thrilled with the data from these deployments though. Also 6214 was found and 6215 may soon be located... Any contacts in... Veracruz, Mexico wanting an early Christmas bonus?

Marine Meganet Unfortunately the "landing sharks with fins on" proposal that Belize co-sponsored at ICCAT in Brazil failed to pass due to opposition from the European Union and China among others. Although there is a ban on the retention and sale of big eye thresher (bar an exception for Mexico) there is no protection for the short f...in mako, which is commonly caught as a byproduct of the bluefin tuna fishery. Back to square two....

It transmitted all the way to shore and was picked up by Todd Neahl, a ranger for TExas Wildlife and Parks - at risk to himself as there was an important red tide which was lietting off noxious fumes. So he couldn;t stay too long around the beach or else he would have had severe respiratory irritation....So I am doubly grateful to him for his efforts.

Marine Meganet Tag 6214 HAS BEEN RECOVERED! If in good enough condition we may be able to redeploy it. Congratulations to Todd Neahr, who works for Texas Parks and Wildlife for the recovery and to Eric Hoffmayer for coordinating the quick response. Thanks also to Emma Hickerson and Marissa Nutall (NOAA- FGBNMS) for putting together a... flyer and contacts for the tag recovery. Photos are following shortly.
