Rex Rvs I was wondering, do you have any articles online at your website about growing root veggies & flower bulbs using hydroponics?

Do I have to choose just one? I loved the Saffron article (ordered me some bulbs too from Nichols). The Come Clone with Us came at the best time for me because I am having issues with rooting Lavender & Rosemary cuttings. Of course the rest of the articles are also very informative but those were my favorites. :)

Rex Rvs I am having problems getting cuttings of Rosemary & Lavender to root. They just wither away. At the moment I am using Clovex which doesn't seem to be working as well on these semi-woody plants. Does anything work on semi-woody plants like these?

This response is courtesy of Matt LeBannister, a regular Maximum Yield contributor. Thank you for your question.

"Sometimes woody plants have a hard time rooting because they won't absorb the rooting compound. A technique called wounding might help. It involves gently scraping around the inch or so of flesh from the bottom of the cutting. This will allow the rooting compound to be more permeable. It also damages the plant slightly so when it heals itself in the presence of the rooting hormones, the plants will more likely spring roots from that area than leaves or other stems.

There are also products that might help improve the odds of rooting such as a heating mat to regulate to temperat in the root space. A humidity dome would help also."... Read More

I've been "wounding" the stems to get them better exposed to rooting compounds. It still doesn't seem to help them root before they wilt & die. I root cuttings in a DWC method of my own design which has been very successful with soft-stemmed cuttings. I will have to try heating them a bit & adding a humidity dome...but won't that provide a growing environment for mold & mildew since these cuttings take a long time to root ( if they root at all) ?

Vented humidity domes are great to help reduce the risk of getting molds or mildews. Even just removing the dome for an hour a day will help prevent mold and will help toughen the cuttings.
I am wondering if these cutting don't really like rooting in such a wet environment. It might be worth trying to root these cuttings in rock-wool starter cubes ... Read Moreand introducing them to the DWC system once they have rooted.
Even adding extra air stones to the reservoir could boost the oxygen levels in the water and improving rooting success. Hope this helps.
