I've asked six of the most renowned crime fiction critics in the country to weigh in with their thoughts on the state of the crime novel. I hope you find their responses as interesting as I did.

New for November 2009: A CADGER'S CURSE. For DD, a thirty-something English professor turned investigator, her routine job should have been a welcome distraction from her fiancé’s death and her eccentric Aunt Elizabeth’s quest to authenticate an unlikely literary treasure—a Robert Burns text worth millions if proven ge...nuine. But who would have guessed that running employee background checks at the HI-Data Corporation would make DD McGil the target of a ruthless killer?Read More

I feel qualified to answer this question because as this is being posted, I am on Day 4 of this flu. In many ways, it’s like any other flu. There’s a fever, sore throat (that soon develops into a nasty, wet cough) and muscle aches. ...

I'm coming from this from a different perspective. My son was born about 3 months early and has Lung Disease. He has complications every time he gets a cold and we usually end up either at the doctor's office or Children's Hospital ER. ANY kind of flu is a huge concern at our house and H1N1 is business as usual here. We don;t want it and we do everything possible to make sure Henry doesn't get it.

The problem this year is that everyone else has raised up to our level of paranoia. I totally understand why people are worried but what's frustrating for us is that he is not getting the vaccine soon enough. Because of all the "hype" he didn't even get the regular flu shot right away and he is part of the highest risk group.

Our clinic has received the live vaccine already but he can't have that one, again because he so young and his body can't handle it yet. Henry has been very sick this fall which has weakened his immune system and is also hard on his lungs. His doctor told us that if we hear of any place that gets the vaccine before them, we should try to get him covered as soon as possible. Because of the "hype" every lead has been exhausted within hours and we are still left unprotected. Not to mention the idea of bringing him to any place with a large amount of people is risky too. He is currently home bound to keep him protected the most and we take every precaution as well.... Read More

While I can not begrudge anyone for wanting to be protected or to protect their own children, I can't help but feel like the health care system has failed us. I can feel the frustration from his doctor and nurses who simply want to treat their patients but can not.

I've been calling and emailing every lead in my area in the hopes that we reach the right person who can help us, but it's hard. There are many others like us too.

So that's H1N1 from our point of view. Worth the hype? My jury is still out...

Let me take this blog down a notch, away from writing and toward the gutter. Halloween was this past Saturday. Love Halloween, always have. Is there a connection between enjoying a holiday based around subterfuge and disguise and being a mystery writer? I dunno...

I couldn't agree more. My little girl is only 4, but as I was looking for costumes I noticed that nearly everything for girls ages 9 and up are all "sexy". Who the heck lets their 9 year old dress like that?!...Love the Penelope idea, that's awesome!:)
