As operations in Iraq and Afghanistan change over the next few years, the Guard should not be allowed to revert to being simply a strategic reserve, said Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Missouri National Guard Approximately 175 Soldiers from the 203rd Engineer Battalion deployed to Afghanistan in October. While deployed, the 203rd will command, control and support three sapper companies in Afghanistan — its own 1141st Engineer Company of Kansas City, the 211th Engineer Company of South Dakota and the 810th Engineer Company o...f Georgia. While admitting initial reservations, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates told a National Guard conference Thursday he sees benefits of a new plan that allows reserve-component servicemembers to conduct pre-deployment training before the clock starts ticking on their 12-month mobilization cycles.

Michelle Hartmann, of Jefferson City, has been named the Missouri National Guard’s first-ever director of psychological health.
Hartmann
said one of her goals is to make mental health a more normal part of
conversation. To some extent, Hartmann said, the stigma associated with
psychological issues is unique to the military.... This stigma can prevent
Soldiers or Airmen from seeking help when they need it, she said. This
is counterproductive, she said, because early intervention can often
keep psychological issues from escalating.
