The Simon Legislation
Named after the late senator from Illinois, who believed that having more graduates with global knowledge and an international experience would “lift our vision and responsiveness to the rest of the world,” the Senator Paul Simon Study Abroad Act aims to send one million students abroad annually in ten years’ time.
This bill, if passed, would create a foundation that would encourage and enable college students from all backgrounds to study abroad and gain valuable international experience all around the world. Goals of the LegislationEstablish an innovative public-private partnership to:
- Increase participation in quality study abroad programs
- Encourage diversity in student participation in study abroad
- Diversify locations of study abroad, particularly in developing countries
- Make study abroad a cornerstone of today's higher education

Congratulations, our advocacy efforts have reached another milestone of success! In June 2009, the House passed the Simon Study Abroad Act as part of the Foreign Relations Authorization bill. This gives the Simon bill significant momentum and helps move us to the next important step - getting the bill passed through the Senate. Coming up...
