The Real Facts About Carol Marie Leuthold’s DairyThis weekend, many Oregonians received a letter that claimed to be from an Oregon dairy farmer opposing Measures 66 & 67. This letter was both ...

How come no one says rising energy prices kill jobs? or rising milk prices?

These two measures merely bring more equity to the tax structure in Oregon....AND when the economy is bad more people need state services...(well, duh)

Multnomah County Democrats Yamhill native and NY Times columnist Nicholas Kristof shares the wrenching story of a Yamhill County man facing a health crisis and a health care industry that turns its collective back. Write Kristof, "So, for those members of Congress who are wavering on health reform, listen to John’s story...."

Those members of Congress who are wavering on health reform are blind to the innumerable Americans who die annually as a consequence of not having insurance.

Multnomah County Democrats - As individuals, our political philosophies and activism are predominately inspired by life experiences, but rarely do those specific and very personal histories make there way into our public discourse. When those histories are revealed, and when we really listen, we gain a more profound understanding and perspective.... Vice Chair Susan Silodor shares a very private slice of her life from the time before Roe v. Wade in today's Oregonian.

I've only once told this story publicly, many years ago to an NBC television reporter who was producing a story on access to medical records. Aside from that, only a few carefully selected people have been privy to the account of my pre-Roe v. ...

Rick, I think underscoring Susan's piece with the simple description of "guilt" as the emotional upshot isn't recognizing the substance of her essay. What Susan describes is a plethora of emotions bashing headlong into environments which were at best indifferent to her plight and at worst, antagonistic.

Susan faced constant severe judgment, and no one - not family, not lover, not even medical professionals - stepped up at any point to offer counseling and support. She was stigmatized as a pregnant young woman; she was stigmatized when she made the decision to end her pregnancy; she was stigmatized even as she received medical treatment.

The crux of this is that she was neither treated as, nor regarded with, the slightest bit of human dignity. And this is exactly the correlation that can be made in examining current politics. While anti-choice forces bleat about the sanctity of life, they have little regard for the women that would continue unwanted pregnancies. In essence, to the anti-choice forces, these women are simply incubators.... See More

Further, these zealots are vehemently opposed to comprehensive (intelligent) sex education, do not support prenatal care, family planning or any other mechanism be which the occurrence of unwanted pregnancies could by reduced.

These zealots are the modern versions of those that ridiculed Susan a generation ago.

Standard, City Center Parking and Nike are funneling contributions to
the anti-taxers through intermediaries, primarily the Portland Business
Alliance and Associated Oregon Industries."

I find it funny esp since the OBA and Nike were originally in support of FAR higher taxes. You just cannot please some groups or people...

Multnomah County Democrats The average cost of T-giving Turkey Dinner is just shy of $43, for 10. (pretty good deal!) The corporate minimum tax in OR is less than 1/4 of that - an even better (i.e. ridiculous) deal. (Ok, we had to work that in)

The holiday season is a mixed bag this year. With many folks struggling, a wide array of charitable organizations have seen their donations drop off at the very time when there is more need.

On the political front, we can work on behalf of YES on 66/67 to ensure that critical state services (health services, public safety and education) are not eviscerated.

On the personal front, we can work locally to help our neighbors. Please contact chair@multdems.org about our Holiday food and clothing drive. Next Tuesday (12/1) evening at 7pm, we'll host an organizational meeting to kick off our activity. Please RSVP if you can make it, and even if you can't but would like to be involved.... See More

Multnomah County Democrats Measures 66/67 Fact for the day: from the Oregon Center for Public Policy:
"The Tax Policy Center’s analysis shows that the campaign against Measures 66 and 67 is relying on phony job numbers shoddily cooked up by hired-gun economists."

Multnomah County Democrats Measure 66/67 fact for the day: The increase on the marginal tax rate for couples making above $250K/yr shakes out like this: A couple who brings in almost $20,700 IN A MONTH will pay and additional $15 in state tax that month --- and even this is a TEMPORARY INCREASE!

66/67 are efforts at maintaining the status quo and budgets are reliant on their passage.... If these measures fail, could we see Oregon devolve into a California-like situation, with students facing a 32% tuition increase?

Oregon's economic situation is not as bleak as the Golden State's, but we've been ranked among the bottom 10 of the economies in 50 states.

Who are we going to look to in a effort to buoy the economy of Oregon if not those that have benefited the most from it?... See More

Multnomah County Democrats - Measure 66/67 fact for the day:
"If Measures 66 and 67 are voted down, the general fund will lack the
money to fund Medicaid at its current budget. The amount of money the
DHS estimates it will lose in general fund
money is $182.5 million. That is the equivalent of providing health
care and related services to 50,000 peop...le.
The DHS also estimates that it could lose a minimum of $225 million in federal matching funds. 'Anytime we cut state funding out of Medicaid, we lose federal money,' (OR Budget & Mgmt Offfice Deputy Admin. Linda) Ames says.

Almost from the moment the state Legislature voted to create $733 million in additional revenue by raising the corporate minimum tax and personal income taxes of wealthy people, drama ensued — predictable in a state known for its hatred of taxes.

Multnomah County Democrats -"While many Democrats were declaring victory last Saturday night with the passage
of a health care reform bill, Republicans, too, had a victory of sorts. They
may have successfully passed the "poison pill" that will kill health
care reform down the road.
One of the culprits this time was Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Michi...gan). He co-sponsored
an amendment to the health care bill with Rep. Joe Pitts (R-Pennsylvania). The
amendment would require women to buy separate "riders" to cover abortions...."

Whenever conservative stalwart Jesse Helms didn't like something in a bill, he would pull out an abortion amendment to slow things down. Helms is dead and gone but the tactic is alive and well and may just kill health care reform.

I got an email from barackobama.com asking me to call and thank Blumenauer for his 'coureagous vote' on health care. I said that I didn't think it was coureagous and that Earl's insistence on Oregon's 'Death with Dignity' provision probably hurt the cause. I got a email back saying it was undeliverable as it was spam. ...So I unsubscribed. If you don't want to hear what I have to say, don't send me what you have to say.
