MyHorse.com To Horses, We Speak a Foreign Language
During the last few months, I’ve been mulling over the question of how we “talk” to our horses, especially while we’re on their backs. I began pondering it as I was putting together my October Horse Journal article “Your Legs: The Key To Communication, Position,” research that made me acutely aware of how imperfectly several of our students were using their aids. | Read more....

I was five years old, my horse spooked, I fell off and hit a rock and fractured my skull in three places. Needless to say, I'm fine today at 46, but wasn't as a child. Parents, please put helmets on your kids if you take them on the trail!

Thought this would be a great place for a question. One of my boarders has a severe eye infection (we've alreay had the vet out). He is a 14 y/o Throughbred and a total pain on his good days and now that he needs care he is worse. My question: what is an effective way to restrain him to tend to his eye care (ointment a...nd cleaning)? I am doing this by myself during the day, Im only 5'3" 120 lbs, and this horse throws his head and thrashes around like a jackass when you so much as touch his face. (All of which is understandable considering I have to stick my finger in his eye) but if I dont administer the care and meds he will lose his eye.Read More

Hi Jacqueline!
In our last issue of HorseLink Magazine we covered something similar--we had an article on vet prep with a how-to video featuring Julie Goodnight. While it's not technically dealing with eye drops, there might be some tricks that you could apply.

Check it out here: http://cde.cerosmedia.com/horselink/1Y4acf1bc07e530790.cde/page/13

I have a young mare that is green broke. I have done ground work with her for a few months and have ridden her on trails. We still need to overcome the fear of the trailer but my BIG problem is that she unexpectedly bucks (and I end up on the ground!) and odd times. My question is what do I do to get her to a) not b...uck or b) when we are finished with the bucking and I am on the ground, what is my "training" when I get back on....last weekend I think a tractor scared the horse in front of us and she got scared from that horse. Thanks....Read More

Hi Amy!
We suggest you look into getting advice from a personal trainer, because this could be a few different issues. Trying checking the saddle fit. We also suggest doing some longeing with her so you can get to the root of the problem. Here's a great article on that:
