I am not sure where you got your figures, and I am not a fan of government spending programs that fail to deliver results. In this case, however, the tax credit has helped get prospective buyers off the fence and into a home for the first time. In New Jersey, the home buyer tax credit has brought an additional 6,500 buyers into the market in 2009... See More compared to 2008. The tax credit pays significant dividends because when a home is sold in New Jersey, income generated from real estate related industries and additional expenditures such as furniture and appliances totals nearly $40,000. I'd say that's a good return on taxpayer dollars.

New Jersey Association of REALTORS® (NJAR®) Today, the House of Representatives voted 403-12 to pass HR 3548, a bill extending unemployment benefits that includes an amendment to also extend and expand the federal tax credit. Now the bill must be sent to the President for his signature before it can become law.
