NYCTF Highlights

NYC Teaching Fellows are Closing the Achievement Gap

Today, over 9,000 Fellows are currently teaching in New York City schools, making up 11% of the city's overall population of teachers. Fellows work in 95% of the city's more than 1,400 schools.

Further, 86% of Fellows teach in high-need subject areas - 22% of all special education teachers, 18% of all science teachers, and 26% of all math teachers in New York City are Fellows.

84% of Fellows teach in schools that are eligible to receive funding due to a high population of students from low income families (Title I).

NYC Teaching Fellows The Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, wants to see “revolutionary” changes made to teacher training programs. How do you think teachers should be trained? An Op-Ed by the director of teacher education at Williams College proposes how to make the changes that Secretary Duncan called for.

I agree with Susan Engel. I also believe that all teachers should learn instructional strategies that have been relegated to Special Education teachers.... all of those "strategies" are just good teaching. Classrooms today have such diverse learners, teachers must know how to teach so that students learn. If students aren't learning, teachers aren't teaching.

NYC Teaching Fellows This year, New York City became the largest school district in the country to announce that it would “go green.” This is no small undertaking—the district has more than 1200 buildings and 1 million students—but efforts are already paying off.

Maria

Maria I've been a teacher for 4 years- and honestly feel that I was as prepared for the classroom as any other 1st year teacher through joining the Fellows. It is an unbelievable experience with every year, every day yielding new experiences and opportunity for growth.

Thanks for your question, Michael! While the size and composition of the next group of Teaching Fellows is still being determined, we select Fellows to teach primarily in shortage areas like special education or science where there is a need for new teachers. If you have other questions about the Teaching Fellows program, please feel free to join us at an information session or contact us directly at fellows@schools.nyc.gov.

Thanks. I am looking forward teaching math but I hear that the city is not hiring at all. I may be wrong.
