NYC Office of Emergency Management During an emergency a wailing alarm may save your life. New York City law requires all residences to have both smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, but these devices are only as good as the batteries inside them. OEM reminds New Yorkers to test their detectors frequently and replace the batteries every six months.
