Mayor Regalado promises revitalization of Miami

National Trust for Historic Preservation Over the past week, we've been sharing our gratitude for some of 2009's preservation successes. (And there will be more this week.) This Thanksgiving, what preservation wins are you thankful for?

Laura Perkins The Baltimore Development Corporation's deadline for RFP proposals to redevelop the historic Senator Theatre, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was today at noon. Without going into details about rumors at the moment, we at Friends of The Senator are very worried about the future of this extraodinary, beautiful landmark theatre.
We are a group of stalwart supporters of Baltimore’s last historic single screen movie house, The Senator Theatre. Even as our internationally known, 1939 art deco, movie palace style neighborhood theatre celebrates her 70th anniversary, her future has reached a crossroads. Though listed on the National Register of H...istoric Places, this alone will not protect or ensure her future. The Baltimore Development Corporation (BDC), on behalf of Baltimore City has issued Requests For Proposals (RFP). Although the BDC document states some positive outlines to respondents regarding preservation of the building's historic attributes, we feel there is a fundamental flaw in the process given that they had/have no plans to include experts/consultants from the field of theatre preservation and/or renovation in the evaluation of the submitted proposals. As we celebrate The Senator's 70th anniversary, we commend former owner Tom Kiefaber and his family's 70 year traditions of excellence and community-oriented service at The Senator. It is our desire that, with community assistance/input, the BDC will choose new owners that will continue these important traditions and avail themselves of Mr. Kiefaber's considerable expertise and experience as The Senator embarks on its next 70 years of making history.Read More
