HMNS is currently hostingthree special exhibitions, two of which areGenghis Khan and Terra Cotta Warriors: Guardians of China’s First Emperor, so the topic for this month’s booklistis soldiers and warfare...

Christina at 8:43pm July 1
Genghis Khan is excellent! Truly exciting. Terra Cotta - a little bit boring but it helps if you go to the Forbidden Gardens in Katy PRIOR to seeing this exhibit. DIAMOND Exhibit - beautiful gems but still nothing compares to the ones the museum already has in the vault.

Charlotte at 7:27am July 2
Yes I've been to the Forbidden Gardens in Katy also. I enjoyed both places.

The Houston Museum of Natural Science was founded in 1909 - meaning that the curators of the Houston Museum of Natural Science have been collecting and preserving natural and cultural treasures for a hundred years now...

Houston Museum of Natural Science We're loving all the fan photos of the Cockrell Butterfly Center! Share your Museum photos with us here, or on our Flickr group page.

Flickr is almost certainly the best online photo management and sharing application in the world. Show off your favorite photos and videos to the world, securely and privately show content to your friends and family, or blog the photos and videos you take with a cameraphone.

We are now just past the summer solstice, which occurred at 12:45am CDT on June 21. Anyone willing to brave the almost 100 degree heat can go out to our sundial and project a real image of the Sun -which would reveal ifany sunspots arepresent...

Houston Museum of Natural Science Sunspots appear dark - only because they are adjacent to much brighter areas of the sun's surface. If you could take them out of the sun, they would shine quite brightly on their own.

Don't forget to "look up" into the night sky very early in the morning of August 12 to see the 2009 Perseid Meteor shower. You can go to the George Observatory in Brazos Bend State Park (for us in Houston area) or if you neighborhood has little light pollution, you can view the 'shower' from your backyard...I'll remind you when August 12 gets closer...AM
Houston Museum of Natural Science at 11:13am June 30
Thanks, Ana Maria! The Perseid meteor shower is one of the best parts of summer. More information on the George Observatory (including how to get there): http://www.hmns.org/see_do /george_observatory.asp

Houston Museum of Natural Science Mastodons in Manhattan? 12,000 years ago they ruled the boggy forests that have now been transformed into one of the world's largest cities. HMNS curator of paleontology Dr. Robert Bakker discusses these "hairy monsters" in this video preview of "Prehistoric New York." (The full program airs 8 p.m. this Sunday on Discovery Channel.)

Huge American mastodons loved to roam the bogs and wetlands of ancient New York and New Jersey.

I know I tend to “toot the horns”of the exotic insects that we have here at the Cockrell Butterfly Center. They really are incredible and most people, including myself (for now at least),would not get the chance to see these animals without traveling to their individual countries of origin...
