Nature's Garden

Nature's Garden Today is the 150th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s landmark book "On the Origin of Species," which introduced the theory of evolution by natural selection. Causing controversy in both religious and scientific circles, Darwin’s book continues to be one of the most influential ever written.

Nature's Garden When Space Shuttle Atlantis takes off Monday, three monarch caterpillars will be on board. Provided by Monarch Watch, they’ll go to the International Space Station to eat, grow, and experience metamorphosis in a weightless environment. Nature's Garden Check bare trees now for the Great Horned Owl. Feathered hornlike ear tufts, white eyebrows, yellow eyes, and a white bib give this 23-inch-tall hunter of mice, voles, rabbits, and other nocturnal critters its nickname -- cat owl or winged tiger. Whatever you call these mighty raptors, they keep watch over our gardens while we sleep.

Nature's Garden Here’s a native shrub cultivar that both birds and bird lovers can sing about. Compact cranberrybush (Viburnum opulus ‘Compactum’) grows only 4-5 feet tall, the perfect size for a small yard. We love the white spring blooms and rosy autumn foliage. Birds gobble up the scarlet berries.

Nature's Garden Are squirrels marauding your bird feeders? You can watch their backyard acrobatics and enjoy feathered visitors, too, by distracting four-legged critters with a feeder of their own, filled with the food they love—corn, sunflower seeds, and peanuts. Here’s a good one: Audubon’s Going Green Recycled Plastic Squirrel Munch Box.

Nature's Garden To discourage squirrels from digging up your freshly planted bulbs, place chicken wire over the planting area. Cover with mulch to weigh down the wire and insulate the soil.

Then in the spring remember to pick the darn wire up before the bulbs grow! It's easier to switch to bulbs they don't like. I gave up tulips after I saw a squirrel munching one in a tree 30 minutes after I planted it. They don't like daffodils.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed - planted about 120 bulbs - daffodils and tulips. The squirrels seem too busy munching on seed in the feeders to be bothered with having to dig for their treat!

You're right, Dorien. Squirrels do tend to leave daffodils alone. They also don't seem to like other bulbs such as allium, chionodoxa, crocus, eranthis, fritillaria, galanthus, and hyacinth. If you really want tulips, though, you'll want to use some sort of barrier to make it difficult for diggers! Some people I know have success covering the planting surface with rocks.

Nature's Garden Instead of bagging all of your fallen leaves and garden trimmings this fall, consider recycling yard waste into an organic-rich soil amendment. Compost (decomposed plant material) is easy to make in your own backyard bin. For more information, go to http://www.bhg.com/gardening/yard/compost/all-about-composting/.
